Conversation With Atomos CEO Peter Barber on Acquiring Flanders Scientific https://news.broadfield.com/conversation-with-atomos-ceo-peter-barber-on-acquiring-flanders-scientific/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 14:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=35484 In this article by Erik Naso for NewsShooter, the recent acquisition of Atomos by Flanders Scientific is explored through insights from Atomos CEO Peter Barber. The deal, valued at $2.35 million in cash plus 5.6 million shares, marks a significant strategic move aimed at strengthening Atomos’ position in the high-end monitoring market. The announcement also had an immediate financial impact, with Atomos shares rising following the news, signaling investor confidence in the acquisition.

The article explains how this acquisition allows Atomos to expand beyond its traditional strengths in on-camera monitor-recorders into the premium reference monitoring space. Flanders Scientific is widely respected in post-production, broadcast, and high-end content creation environments, where precise color accuracy and reliability are essential. By bringing FSI into its portfolio, Atomos gains access to a trusted lineup of professional-grade monitors that have already undergone years of validation and industry adoption.

Importantly, Flanders Scientific will continue to operate as its own brand, maintaining its established identity, engineering philosophy, and product standards. Rather than rebranding, Atomos plans to support and scale FSI’s reach while preserving what makes it valuable to professionals. The article notes that this approach not only protects FSI’s reputation but also allows Atomos to benefit from an additional revenue stream without disrupting an already successful business model.

Naso also highlights the broader implications of the acquisition, including the potential for deeper integration between the two companies’ technologies. While there is speculation about whether Atomos’ AtomOS platform could eventually be incorporated into FSI products, no official plans have been confirmed. However, the move clearly positions Atomos to offer a more comprehensive, end-to-end monitoring ecosystem—from capture through final color grading.

Finally, the article provides perspective from both CEOs, emphasizing the long-term vision behind the deal. Barber frames the acquisition as part of a larger strategy to build a stronger, more innovative company through both internal development and strategic acquisitions. Meanwhile, Flanders Scientific CEO Bram Desmet underscores the opportunity to expand their reach while continuing to deliver the trusted tools professionals rely on. Together, the companies aim to elevate production and post-production workflows by combining precision, scale, and innovation.

NAB 2026 Insights: AI Hype, NDI’s Evolution, and Uncertain Future for NDI|HX https://news.broadfield.com/nab-2026-insights-ai-hype-ndis-evolution-and-uncertain-future-for-ndihx/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 20:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=35550 In this article by Anthony Burokas for StreamingMedia, the author reflects on the state of the broadcast and streaming industry at NAB Show 2026, noting that despite global uncertainty, streaming technology itself has matured significantly. What was once prone to failure—especially large-scale live streams—has now become stable and routine, even for major sports and event productions. However, he points out that much of the industry’s activity has shifted toward corporate consolidation and financial maneuvering rather than groundbreaking innovation.

A major theme explored is the growing—and often overstated—presence of AI in production tools. Burokas critiques how “AI” branding is being applied broadly, even to technologies like PTZ camera tracking that have existed for decades. While improvements exist, he emphasizes that these systems still fall short of replacing skilled human operators. He also highlights a gap in innovation, expressing interest in more advanced workflows—such as using high-resolution 360° cameras to create dynamic, multi-angle outputs—but notes that such capabilities are still not widely available in practical production environments.

The article then shifts focus to the evolution of NDI, which has reached its 10-year milestone. While high-end broadcast environments continue adopting SMPTE ST 2110, NDI remains for its accessibility and efficiency, particularly with the introduction of NDI|HX3, which leverages H.265 compression to deliver high-quality 4K video over standard network infrastructure. This has made it especially appealing for schools, houses of worship, and smaller production teams that lack the resources for more complex IP-based systems.

However, Burokas raises concerns about the future of NDI|HX due to recent licensing changes by Via Licensing Alliance. The restructuring of H.264/AVC licensing fees—moving from a flat cap to a tiered system—could significantly impact both streaming providers and hardware manufacturers. The author cites examples like HP and Dell disabling HEVC support in their devices over relatively small cost increases, illustrating how sensitive the market is to licensing fees.

Ultimately, the article questions the long-term viability of H.26x-based NDI workflows. Since many NDI|HX products rely on these codecs, rising licensing costs could lead to higher prices or reduced adoption. Burokas suggests that companies like Vizrt may need to explore alternative codecs or partnerships—such as with Open Media Transport—to ensure flexibility and sustainability. While NDI remains a powerful and widely used tool, its future—particularly in its compressed HX form—may depend on how the industry adapts to these evolving licensing challenges.

Canon Unveils World’s Longest Cine-Servo Lens at NAB 2026 https://news.broadfield.com/canon-unveils-worlds-longest-cine-servo-lens-at-nab-2026/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 15:30:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=35499 In this article by Alec C. Cohen for ProVideo Coalition, Canon builds on its legacy in long-range cinematography with the introduction of the new Canon CINE-SERVO 40-1200mm T5.0-10.8 at NAB Show 2026. The article reflects on the impact of Canon’s original 50-1000mm Cine-Servo lens, released over a decade ago in response to filmmaker Ivo Norenberg’s challenge to create a single lens capable of capturing both distant wildlife and sweeping landscapes. That lens became a staple for cinematographers working in demanding environments, particularly in wildlife and sports production.

Canon’s latest iteration pushes those boundaries even further. The new 40-1200mm lens offers an expanded focal range, making it the longest cine-servo lens currently available. Designed with flexibility in mind, it supports both PL and RF mounts and covers Super 35mm sensors, while also offering full-frame compatibility via a 1.5x extender. With the extender engaged, the lens can reach an impressive 60-1800mm range, giving filmmakers unprecedented reach without sacrificing versatility. Despite these enhancements, Canon has managed to maintain a similar size and weight to its predecessor, making it practical for field use.

The article emphasizes how this lens continues to bridge the gap between cinematic storytelling and broadcast functionality. By combining extended zoom capabilities with manageable ergonomics, Canon is reinforcing its commitment to hybrid production workflows. The new Cine-Servo lens not only surpasses its predecessor—the long-reigning 50-1000mm—but also redefines what’s possible for capturing extreme distances and fine detail in a single, unified tool.

We’re on the AJ booth with Abe and we’re looking at the new Open Gear OG Gen 10 sync generator. >> So, a we’re looking at a a sync generator here. >> Yes, we are. We’re looking at a sync generator. It’s a simple but amazing type of thing, you know? I mean, you you got to synchronize everything in a broadcast facility, don’t you? >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. So, this this this is it. I mean, new new for NAB 2026. We’re seeing this for the first time here. It’s the OG Gen 10. I love saying OG. Open Gear OG. It just it just sounds right. The the the Gen 10 is just that. It’s a sync generator. Um the the Open Gear version here, you have you have nine synchronized reference outputs. You can actually have two different groups of independent outputs. So, you know, you need to generate a little bit of Black Burst, a little bit of tri level, you can do that with OG Gen 10. Uh because it’s open gear. Uh we originally made this as a mini converter uh way back in 2007 actually to great fanfare because simple sync generators are actually kind of rare in this world. Um but the open gear version actually affords some really cool advantages here. I mean obviously you have Ross dashboard available to you. So you can have multiple OG gen 10s in a single open gear uh frame and you can control them all with one piece of glass. That’s always a nice thing. We love Ross dashboard. Um, you know, if you had in this situation, we have multiple different kinds of open gear boards all in one frame. We’re controlling them all through just one interface. It’s super super convenient. Also, these Ross Open Gear frames, they have uh reference inputs on them. So, you could actually have a house reference signal and it’s like, okay, well, I want to distribute that signal. Run that into your open gear frame that has OG 10s in it. The OG Gen 10 grabs that reference and it can replicate it out all of its outputs to send throughout your facility. It’s really, really simple, but sometimes the really, really simple products are what people really want because we don’t want to put any extra fluff in here. You know, your sync is very, very important. That keeps everything lined up. So, you know what? Purpose-built device that just does that. It’s deterministic behavior. You know, exactly what it’s going to do and it’s just going to do it all the time. >> Yeah. So, the configuration switches you you have on there, what are they doing? Because you can control most of it through the UI, I guess. >> Yes. Yeah. I mean, you control absolutely every feature through the UI, but since it’s such a simple type of thing, we put DIP switches on there, too, just in case you don’t have a laptop there. You can’t network in and pull up dashboard. You can configure, you know, you you you can have outputs one, you know, we got output one through four. You can switch it to SD or HD, 5 through 9, SD or HD. You can control black or bars. You can say, “Hey, I’m doing 5994. I’m doing 50.” So all of the stuff can be controlled through DIP switches if you don’t have a laptop handy to to hook up and run dashboards. So >> it’s simple product, simple solutions, you know. >> Amazing. So is this new for NAB? >> Yes, new for new for NAB 2026. Um yeah, this is the first time the public’s seeing it. And you know, a lot of people asked us for this uh for a really long time. So I’m very very happy that we have it out now. >> Shipping now. >> It is shipping now. >> Where can people find out more information, Abe? >> Come on to aja.com. Uh you’ll you you’ll find uh the OG Gen 10, all the information about it, plus all of our other Open Gear products and everything else that’s in this booth, eja.com. And you know, any questions, you can always contact us. Hey, >> thank you very much, Dave. >> Thank you so much.
