Tones and Colours is a Sri Lankan-based media production company specialising in delivering visually unique projects. Keen to optimise their workflow, the team seized the opportunity to integrate the Ninja Ultra with Atomos Connect into their setup.

With a busy schedule of jobs lined up, their first priority was to put the Ninja Ultra through its paces. A commercial for fashion outlet Hameedia saw the monitor-recorder used alongside the director’s monitor as a primary way of viewing the footage. In addition to the Ninja’s bright, high-definition display, its built-in monitoring tools allowed Shenick Tissera, the team’s creative director, to review and adjust settings during the production simultaneously. He added: “It was a hectic shoot where every single moment mattered. However, with the Ninja, I could accurately monitor exposure levels using the false colour and focus settings. I could also get a feel for the final look by using our own LUTs.”

Charged with creating the Sri Lankan cricket jersey launch video for fashion brand Moose, the team opted for a dependable set up capable of recording in ProRes RAW. Using a RED Komodo camera, operated in tandem with a Sony FX3 camera connected to the Ninja Ultra, they successfully captured two angles in high quality. Keeping to a tight deadline was crucial, as they only had six hours to capture the players and wrap up production. “This project was all about time management, and being able to utilise ProRes RAW allowed us to match the colours between the two cameras quickly,” he added.

The ability to record in ProRes RAW with the Ninja was a big bonus for Shenick and the wider team. Not only did it enhance image quality, but it increased on-set productivity and reduced time spent in post-production. Shadim Sadiq, the team’s cinematographer, also praised the benefits of shooting in ProRes, saying: “It helped us capture as much detail as possible and allowed us to really push the colours during post-production.”

The post-production process can often be a relentless task, which editor Jaden Daniel is all too familiar with. “As a video editor, my number one resource is time,” he says. By combining the Ninja with the Atomos Connect module, the team could send files anywhere on location using Camera to Cloud directly to Frame.io, where Jaden could access them remotely in Colombo. This enabled him to stay ahead of the curve by editing the clips while filming took place. “No matter where my team is in the world, I can get footage transferred to me seamlessly and efficiently.” It’s clear Atomos has redefined their way of working, allowing the team at Tones and Colours to implement their creative vision: “This system has saved me tons of time,” Jaden reaffirms.

How GMedia tells great stories in no time with Camera to Cloud https://news.broadfield.com/how-gmedia-tells-great-stories-in-no-time-with-camera-to-cloud/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=27431 In the blog post “How GMedia tells great stories in no time with Camera to Cloud” by Atomos for Videomaker, the creative agency for Green Machine Ensembles at George Mason University, uses a Camera to Cloud (C2C) workflow to streamline their video production process. Senior producer Joshua Cruse shares his experiences and highlights the advantages of this innovative approach:

Joshua Cruse, a musician turned videographer, started capturing musical performances at George Mason University with a simple camera. As GMedia evolved, he built a team to capture various events, from candid shots to social media content.

Before adopting the C2C workflow, GMedia faced challenges with traditional video production, including long wait times for media off-loading and the struggle to keep up with evolving post-production needs.

The transition to C2C began with the integration of Atomos Connect module for Ninja and Frame.io, tools already in use by GMedia. The continuity of using Atomos devices from the late 2010s to the mid-2020s provided a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

C2C significantly improved the workflow by allowing near-instant file uploads to Frame.io through Atomos Cloud Studio. This accelerated the editing process, enabling the team to create quick social media edits and meet tight deadlines.

Josh emphasizes the value of time as a non-renewable resource and highlights how C2C has made the team’s life easier. The C2C workflow includes Atomos monitor-recorders with C2C connectivity, providing accessibility from anywhere.

A real-world example from April 2023 illustrates the flexibility of C2C. When a team member couldn’t attend an on-site production due to injury, they remotely edited footage in near real-time, showcasing the adaptability of the workflow.

For GMedia, C2C is not just a short-term solution but a transformative way of creating content efficiently. The workflow saves time, promotes collaboration, and ensures a quick turnaround without compromising recording quality.

In conclusion, GMedia is committed to using C2C as long as Frame.io and Atomos support it, signifying the enduring impact of this innovative workflow on their storytelling process.

Atomos Edit Public Beta Now Available https://news.broadfield.com/atomos-edit-public-beta-now-available/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=26041 Matthew Allard ACS recently wrote an article for NewsShooter discussing Atomos Edit Public Beta. Atomos Edit Public Beta, a cloud-based video editing platform, has been released. Atomos Edit, an Australian company, states to be “here to revolutionize your video editing experience.” Atomos Edit was first announced in April 2023 as part of Cloud Studio, a suite of cloud-based video production services.

Atomos Edit differs from traditional NLE programs in that it can only be accessed and used through a web browser. According to Atomos, this gives users access to a powerful suite of editing tools at any time and from any location. To use it, simply sign in on any computer and begin editing. This enables you to edit content without the need for physical storage, software installation, or drivers.

KEY FEATURES

  • Professional-style timeline with multiple audio and video tracks
  • Multi-user editing with the ability to lock the timeline
  • Collaborative review, comment, tag and approve workflows
  • High-speed, interrupt-resilient uploads of large video files
  • Effects and transitions
  • Powerful sequence versioning
  • The ability to directly import stock video content

The pitch for Atomos Edit is that it removes the hassle of cables, offloading media, and transportation. Atomos claims that Edit is the ‘Ultimate tool for immediate social media sharing to YouTube and other social media platforms‘.

You can have multiple audio and video tracks on the Atomos Edit timeline. It also includes multi-user editing, as well as the ability to lock the timeline to ensure that edits are properly managed.

You can use effects and transitions, as well as directly import stock video content, to enhance your video. According to Atomos, there are over two million royalty-free stock elements available for dragging and dropping into your timeline to save time and money.

While shooting, Atomos Edit allows you to upload files to your Atomos Edit bin in the background. With the free public beta release of Atomos Edit, it is no longer possible to upload footage directly from Atomos Connect products, nor is it possible to add additional storage. This functionality, according to Atomos, will be available in the shipping version. This is strange given that Atomos Edit is intended to work with Atomos CONNECT. ATOMOS CONNECT is built into Zato CONNECT and Shogun CONNECT, and adds network connectivity and cloud services (via subscription) to existing products such as the Ninja V and Ninja V+.

The entire pitch at launch was that you would be able to upload media directly from an Atomos device in the field and then edit it on any browser using Atomos Edit, so I am not sure what you will be able to do with the Beta version.

The Ninja V and V+ with ATOMOS CONNECT and Shogun CONNECT can capture from most video cameras and record internally using a high-quality codec such as ProRes or ProRes RAW. At the same time, they can record high-quality full HD H.26, a much smaller but still high-quality codec. This proxy format is automatically uploaded to the cloud and is immediately editable with Atomos Edit. Zato CONNECT is optimized for cloud use and records directly into H.264, which also serves as a proxy format.

According to Atomos, if you want a more professionally finished version later, you can transfer your full-resolution files to popular editing software and relink using Atomos Edit’s XML data.

You can also use collaborative workflow tools to allow users to review, comment, tag, and so on. This can be accomplished using a smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer. Atomos provides activity reports and push notifications to show you who has viewed, downloaded, and commented on the shared video files.

Once you’ve finished editing, you can upload finished media to the cloud or publish directly to YouTube and Vimeo without downloading and editing large media files.

So what can you do with the Public Beta version?

What is available with the Public Beta version is shown above. Atomos recommends using Chrome or Firefox for the best performance. The editor does not support Internet Explorer. Safari is mostly supported, but live color correction rendering during editing is not currently possible.

Price & Availability

According to Atomos back in April, Atomos Edit will be available in three subscription plans:

  • Free
  • $10 USD per user per month
  • $50 USD per user per month

Speed Up Your Wedding Filmmaking https://news.broadfield.com/speed-up-your-wedding-filmmaking/ Thu, 13 Jul 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=26013 By implementing a Capture to Cloud workflow, Peter Ali took the stress out of his usual frantic wedding filmmaking gigs. Being a solo shooter and editor, with Peter’s Sony A7SIII & Ninja V with Atomos Connect module, he could provide the happy couple an edit a few hours after the ceremony.

Peter of Mocha Films is an experienced wedding videographer and creative coach in the wedding industry. He practices efficient filmmaking and provides deliverables to his couples with fast turnarounds. In the past, shooters had to wait until they got back from their shoot – no matter how far from their studio – so they could offload their hefty footage and begin post-production. This process is eliminated with C2C. Now, you hit record on your Connect device, and within seconds, easy-to-use proxies appear in Frame.io to edit in Premiere Pro, Final Cut and other NLEs. The Ninja’s built-in exposure and focus-assist tools are a bonus to the workflow, guiding Peter to nail composition and exposure every time.

Shooting weddings can be extremely stressful, but not with the Camera to Cloud.

Ninja V is a small form factor, 1 in. thick 5 in. monitor recorder that offers amazing features to DSLR/Cinema users. Record up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR video direct from your camera’s sensor, over HDMI 2.0. Store edit-ready ProRes or DNxHR on affordable SSD drives and bypass your cameras internal compression and record time limits. 1TB will give you 2.5hrs 4K on tiny AtomX SSDmini. The stunningly bright 5.2-inch 10-bit HDR monitor has an astounding 1,000 nits of output. It’s a sleek 1” (2.5cm) aluminium body, is crafted for maximum durability, weighs in at just 11oz (320g), and attaches to any camera rig easily.

ATOMOS CONNECT is the ultimate accessory for the NINJA V and NINJA V+ and represents a ground-breaking innovation for the NINJA product line. The ATOMOS CONNECT fits to the back on the NINJA V/V+ and features a 12G SDI interface, ATOMOS AirGlu™ wireless timecode for seamlessly synchronizing all cameras, multiple power options to accommodate a variety of on-set scenarios, plus Wi-Fi 6, network Gigabit Ethernet, and Bluetooth LE capabilities for flexible connections. When attached to the NINJA V/ V+, the ATOMOS CONNECT transforms professional cinema, mirrorless, and DSLR cameras into fully integrated devices that support a range of advanced cloud-based workflows.

What is ATOMOS CONNECT?

Introducing ATOMOS CONNECT, a ground-breaking module that makes ATOMOS recording monitors more efficient for cloud-based workflows. As a built-in type, SHOGUN CONNECT is additionally accessible by docking with the already-existing NINJA V and NINJA V+.

This module makes it possible to connect to the network wirelessly, and by integrating with Adobe’s “Frame.io” cloud collaboration tool, project participants can share recently shot film from any location in the world.

Before Frame.io was acquired by Adobe, editors who were passionate about cloud workflows had already told ProNews about it. They used it for remote grading feedback work, especially during the time when they were staying at home. You can save information in a folder hierarchy, record movies in units of one frame (which is really appreciated! ), add text or handwritten notes, and share easily with only the individuals you want to share with. All of these features are possible in a secure environment. This platform serves that purpose. Additionally, it has a feature that shows the timecode when the mouse is placed over the seek bar, which is sometimes overly useful.

Trials

ProNews was given permission to use the SHOGUN CONNECT while a specific short film was being shot. Then ProNews questioned whether the team could use it and operate it for a medium to long time, as well as how difficult it would be to implement it. I verified it by gently placing the SHOGUN CONNECT on it.

Here’s what the actual organization chart looks like:

Basic Organizational Chart:

  • Director
  • Producer
  • Production Department
  • Editing Department
  • Design and Decoration Department
  • Stylist
  • Hair and Makeup
  • Cinematography Department

The director challenged himself to attempt to limit the number of employees in each department to a minimum, which resulted in a significant decrease in the number of employees in each department. ProNews believes that the organizational chart itself ended up feeling more substantial than initially anticipated because there would unavoidably be many people involved in a video shoot.

In the shooting department ProNews led, they basically always had two cameras, A-cam and B-cam, and shot with Slog3 with Sony FX3 body recording, but it was decided from the beginning that we would mainly use AF without a focus puller. The full-time assistant position was basically only one chief. It’s like a pinch hitter and +1 person or something like that. Therefore, while chaos was expected, we secured a DIT (Data Imaging Technician) to prevent any sad data-related incidents related to backups. In such a crowded situation, we decided that it would be comfortable to install SHOGUN CONNECT at the base of DIT.

In a typical data management sequence, the camera assistant gives the raw media at the time of the reel change, the DIT base creates proxy data using some sort of capture device, and the video file is wirelessly transported from the camera to the DIT booth. I wonder whether it will use a card reader or something similar to back up significant footage.

It was essentially the same this time. From the perspective of accident prevention, ProNews specifically assumed that SHOGUN CONNECT would be left as a supplemental existence and that ProNews would assess the usability after cooling down because it was a site where there was no presumption regarding verification. The position, though, presented itself at an odd time.

When do you need C2C, and in what kind of field is it effective?

What caught me ProNews guard was how quickly SHOGUN CONNECT was still able to upload over mobile Wi-Fi. To be honest, it was heating up and running for a very long period, yet the HD proxy data transfer continued uninterruptedly.

For example,

  • A few elite level projects
  • In the field where it is better to upload the proxy to the cloud reliably and without hassle,
  • But not a budget that can call DIT,
  • Moreover, there is an editor in a remote place,
  • But I have to edit from the side of shooting and run until delivery

If it’s something like that, C2C will definitely work. The same is true for film productions where a lot of brief footage is produced and data extraction for editing is challenging without employing a capture board.

Differences between ATOMOS CONNECT/SHOGUN CONNECT/ZATO CONNECT

The product lent to ProNews this time was the SHOGUN CONNECT, which is a conventional SHOGUN (7-inch recording monitor) with built-in C2C functions. On the other hand, ATOMOS CONNECT, as mentioned above, is a product that allows you to add cloud tool functions to the NINJA V (5-inch recording monitor) and NINJA V+ (5-inch new monitor). As for the first ZATO CONNECT, it is a built-in model (5-inch recording monitor) that specializes in streaming distribution. When connected to a network, it is a preview monitor that can be used as a source for YouTube, live streaming, and webcams. The point is that these products can be connected to Wi-Fi as long as there is a network environment, and they are enclosures that can play back and record images stand-alone.

In Conclusion

ProNews believes that the ATOMOS products were employed effortlessly across departments in the filming site where they tested everything this time, defying their expectations. In order to access the files uploaded by C2C, they didn’t want to add to the workload of the on-site installation support, but since the confirmation URL was well-known, it was as simple as giving someone a YouTube link. The concerns came to nothing because they was accepted. And they believe that by avoiding the distraction of consciousness, they were able to focus on the subject matter of the shot and maybe save time.
