The trip presented Sidney to run his new Ninja V+ through its paces. Would it transform the way he works with his trusted Sony AS7 III mirrorless camera?

The world’s first 8K RAW HDR monitor recorder. The Ninja V+ is the next stage in the evolution of the multi-award winning Atomos Ninja, delivering up to 8Kp30 and 4Kp120 continuous recording in Apple ProRes RAW while inheriting HDR, 4Kp60 RAW and video as well as HDp120 slow motion from it’s little brother, Ninja V.

The “extra real estate” of the bright, 5-inch touchscreen on Ninja V+ meant Sidney could see more of the image and even though he had access to a sun visor, he found he didn’t need it even working in the middle of a sunny day. Ninja V+ is also packed with a range of monitoring tools that enabled Sidney to work analyze each frame and shoot with confidence. His go-to tools are the waveform, guides, focus peaking, and Sidney’s own custom LUTs, which he could use for continuous reference during recording to check exposure, compose each shot, and test different looks. The trip to New York gave Sidney an opportunity to really test Ninja V+. The device does not disappoint and offers new ways for Sidney to get more from his existing camera gear. This is the true power of the device and Sidney has happily joined the growing number of filmmakers who choose to use Ninja V+ to add a new dimension to their creative toolbox.

Turn Your Atomos Ninja V Into a Multi-Input Switcher With The New AtomX CAST https://news.broadfield.com/turn-your-atomos-ninja-v-into-a-multi-input-switcher-with-the-new-atomx-cast/ Thu, 08 Jul 2021 20:04:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=19064 The new Atoms AtomX CAST allows you to simply connect, switch and stream. The AtomX CAST is a modular companion for the Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+ monitor-recorder that uses the AtomX expansion port on the Ninja V/V+ to transform it into an advanced multi-input switcher. The combination of the Ninja V and AtomX CAST becomes the Ninja CAST, a fully functional stand-alone switcher, multiview monitor and broadcast quality recorder that does not require a computer to function. With a high quality 5” HDR touchscreen monitor, 4 x HDMI inputs and physical buttons, the Ninja CAST is the ultimate portable live switching and streaming solution.

Videomaker tells users how they can turn their Ninja V into a multi-input switcher the AtomX Cast. Here is what they say.

Pairing the AtomX CAST with the Ninja V or V+ (a setup Atomos named the Ninja CAST) turns the monitor/recorder into a 5” touchscreen monitor with four HDMI inputs and physical buttons. The component connects to the monitors through the AtomX expansion port. Once connected, you can hook up cameras, computers, consoles, pre-recorded content sources or any valid video source and share them on your broadcast. You switch between the sources using the monitor’s touchscreen or buttons. Additionally, you can also overlay graphics and use and picture-in-picture — boosting the production value of your video.

Introducing the Atomos AtomX CAST – Live-streaming & Multicam Switching with the Atomos Ninja V https://news.broadfield.com/introducing-the-atomos-atomx-cast-live-streaming-multicam-switching-with-the-atomos-ninja-v/ Fri, 25 Jun 2021 18:30:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=18982 Earlier this week Atomos accouned the new AtomX Cast. The AtomX CAST is compatible with the Atomos Ninja V and Ninja V+ monitor-recorders and can transform your unit into an advanced four-HDMI switcher. CineD’s Jeff Loch covers the extciting new product and goes over it’s important features in their new article.

Here are some highlights from CineD’s article.

The Atomos AtomX CAST is one of the biggest expansion modules of the entire AtomX lineup and takes the concept to another level.
Indeed, you’ll have to insert your Ninja V/V+ onto the CAST module, plug the AtomX port, and secure the monitor-recorder to the CAST module via a screw at the top of the unit. You’ll end up with what looks like a totally new product.

Jeff Loch

With the Ninja V/V+ docked into the AtomX CAST, you can use the 5” touchscreen for setup operations. Also, your monitor-recorder doubles up as a more “traditional” monitor with all Ninja V/V+ built-in monitoring/exposure/focus tools. Then switch to multi-view to see all four inputs at once, complete with audio level monitoring.
Last but not least, the Ninja V/V+ HDMI output can be used as a secondary output that can be set up as a duplicate program out, preview monitoring, or a dedicated multi-view output.

Jeff Loch

Check out the key features of the AtomX Cast

  • Xpand and transform Ninja V/V+ in to a 4 x HDMI input switcher
  • Overlay custom graphics, logos, lower thirds and content branding
  • Picture in Picture effect for any combination of inputs
  • WebCAST – Plug and Play UVC connection to your favourite software such as Zoom, MS Teams, Skype, OBS and more
  • BroadCAST – quality switching and recording in ProRes, DNx and option for h.265
  • MultiCAST – Simultaneously Record, Stream and output to local displays
  • Touch Screen and Physical buttons with LED status indicators
  • Separate HDMI outputs – Dedicated Program out and Multifunction on Ninja V/V+ for Multiview, Preview or Program
  • Audio Input and switching options with support for embedded, analogue inputs and Audio follow Video
  • Easy Quick deployment of reliable stand alone – Simply Connect,  Switch and Stream

Atomos launches Ninja V Pro Kit: RAW over SDI from the Ninja V and more https://news.broadfield.com/atomos-launches-ninja-v-pro-kit-raw-over-sdi-from-the-ninja-v-and-more/ Wed, 03 Mar 2021 15:53:31 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=17774 Allan Tépper from ProVideo wrote up an article about the Atomos Ninja V Pro Kit: RAW over SDI

Atomos has just announced of its new Ninja V Pro Kit. This new Pro Kit enables a new feature in the Ninja V and includes many bundled accessories. Those who purchase at launch will receive a bonus: a free Átomos Connect in the box. The new functionality includes RAW from several popular Canon, Panasonic and Sony cinema cameras. Ahead you’ll find a video, the exact camera models and included accessories in the official press release (with my comments in parenthesis).

This pro kit includes:

  • Ninja V with SDI RAW Pre-Activated, AtomX SDI module,
  • 1 x Battery eliminator
  • 1 x international DC power supply
  •  1 x Dtap Cable
  •  1 x AtomX 5” Sunhood
  •  1 x Master Caddy II Optional Extras  Power kit, HDMI cables, US

It can now easily work with some of the best cine-cameras on the market! Here’s a few examples

  • Canon C500mki and C300mkii, both offering RAW up to 4k DCI and 4k UHD at up to p30 (or p29.97)
  • Panasonic’s Varicam LT, RAW output up to 4k p60 (or p59.94) and high frame rate up to 2k p240 (or p239.76)
  • Panasonic EVA, RAW output up to 5.7k p30 (or p29.97) and high frame rate up to 2k p240 (or p239.76)
  • Sony FX9 with XDCA-FX9, RAW output at up to 4k DCI p60 (or p59.94) and 2k p180 (or p179.82).
  • Sony FX6, RAW output up to 4k DCI p60 (or p59.94)

This also adds a more comprehensive IO which helps provide off board 10bit 422 recording while also having an assortment of codecs and file formats including RED & Arri cameras.

In playback mode the Ninja V provides a lossless signal distribution with 2 x 12G SDI and 1 x HDMI 2.0 for simultaneous outputs up to 4K p60. When used in combination with the Ninja’s playlist functionality it provides a fast and convenient way to review content or show a highlight reel.

Most monitors also boast of good viewability in bright sunlight, but only increase the back light distorting the colors of your image. Not the case with the Atomos Ninja V. Now having the Ninja V Sunhood will help keep your screen clean, clear, and show the best image possible.

This can also now do HDMI to SDI cross conversion! Your image can now be cropped, or 4K footage can be downscaled within the monitor.

The Ninja V Pro Kit also offers 3 types of power options:

  • In the Studio you can use the included DC power supply with lockable jack to connect to the Ninja V and with the international power plugs you’ll be covered wherever your work might take you.
  • On-set via the included DTAP cable to connect to your choice of battery with a DTap output meaning your camera rig can run from a single power source.
  • On the move with a compact rig you also have the choice to run the Ninja directly from an optional NPF battery or any 4 cell NPF you might have in your kit bag.

What about shooting in RAW?

Apple ProRes RAW is now firmly established as the new standard for RAW video capture, with an ever-growing number of supported HDMI and SDI cameras.

Essentially it gives filmmakers more control than almost any format out there. Brightness and shadow detail is second to none. With the NinjaV, you can now record with ProRes RAW directly, even if your camera does not have this as an option!

If you already have a Ninja V. No problem. The kit items are also available separately. Also the upgrade to ProRes RAW is available for a $99.00 firmware update (you get an activation code).

Atomos announces ProRes RAW for Olympus cameras https://news.broadfield.com/atomos-announces-prores-raw-for-olympus-cameras/ Fri, 18 Sep 2020 16:32:48 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=16529 Olympus users who love the OM-D family for its portability and in-body 5-axis image stabilization will be able to get all the benefits of a ProRes RAW workflow soon, thanks to a firmware update.

Atomos continues its cooperation with different camera brands to extend the use of Apple ProRes RAW with a variety of models. ProRes RAW is now a firmly established as the new standard for RAW video capture and is available on a growing number of cameras, ranging from the Sony Alpha 7S III to a selected range of Z CAM cameras that output RAW over HDMI. ProRes RAW combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the incredible real-time performance of ProRes.

The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Atomos was the first to implement the professional Apple ProRes RAW format for recording with cinema cameras and continues push the boundaries of innovation with RAW recording over HDMI. Now it is time for the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras to get access to the feature, making the brand the eighth to use the format.

As these Olympus cameras and the Atomos Ninja V will record Apple ProRes RAW directly from the camera’s sensor, Olympus users who love the OM-D family for its portability and in-body 5-axis image stabilization will get all the benefits of a ProRes RAW workflow – creative control to adjust the color and look of the video in post-production while extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows.

Olympus OM-D cameras and the Ninja V

Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the image in HDR quality with a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing users to perfect their shot setup. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

Jeromy Young, Atomos CEO, said: “We’re thrilled to work with Olympus and their stunning mirrorless cameras to bring the power of Apple’s ProRes RAW to OM-D users. We can’t wait to see the creativity that results from this partnership”.

The firmware update to enable these features is scheduled for winter 2020.

Atomos Ninja V enables 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW with Fujifilm GFX100 https://news.broadfield.com/atomos-ninja-v-enables-12-bit-4k-prores-raw-with-fujifilm-gfx100/ Fri, 04 Sep 2020 15:06:51 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=16383 Available now: Atomos release final version for Ninja V to enable large format 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW recording with Fujifilm GFX100 & Apple ProRes RAW recording up to 120fps with the SIGMA fp

We are excited to be releasing the full firmware update for the Ninja V that enables:

  • Large format 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW recording with Fujifilm GFX1
  • Apple ProRes RAW recording up to 120fps with the SIGMA fp

Fujifilm GFX100:

The GFX100, Ninja V and ProRes RAW gives filmmakers an entirely new way to shoot. The look of large format video has recently become very popular in Hollywood, with the ability to use high quality lenses with different technical characteristics. This feel can now be achieved more affordably with the GFX100 and Ninja V, and at the same time, fully harnessing the power of RAW. The resulting images have amazing depth, detail and the maximum latitude for post-production — optimal for HDR finishing or to give greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709).

We have created some assets to support this release, please feel free to share with users and your channel:

Fujifilm GFX100 and Ninja V users can update their Ninja V here!

SIGMA fp

The SIGMA fp becomes the smallest camera combination to record ProRes RAW, opening up a wide range of shooting options. The camera’s small size means that end-users can shoot with the full flexibility of RAW almost anywhere. The fp body is perfect for mounting as a POV or crash camera, for use on gimbals or even worn on the body.

Alternatively, with the addition of Ninja V, cage and other accessories, the fp can also be built out into a fully rigged cinema-style camera with the option to use a wide range of L-mount lenses natively, or PL mount, EF mount and many other lenses via the use of adapters.

One of the add on benefits for end-users is that the accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the SIGMA fp RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats for optimal exposure.
