A Case for Bonded Cellular https://news.broadfield.com/a-case-for-bonded-cellular/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 16:19:19 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=24301 LiveU recently posted an article to their blog discussing the pros and cons of moving from 4G to 5G. Cellular bonding is the process of using multiple cellular connections simultaneously to increase bandwidth and reliability. With the rollout of 5G networks, some have suggested that cellular bonding may no longer be necessary as 5G is supposed to offer faster speeds and more reliable connections. However, the reality is that 5G coverage is still limited, and it may be some time before it is widely available in all areas. Additionally, 5G networks may experience congestion during peak usage times, just like 4G networks.

In the context of field production, cellular bonding can provide a more reliable and consistent connection for streaming video and other data-intensive tasks. In areas where 5G coverage is limited or unreliable, cellular bonding can be used as a backup or to supplement the 5G connection.

5G can certainly be a valuable complement to cellular bonding in field production. By working with carriers and customers to test 5G in simulated and real-world environments, your company can better understand how 5G can be used in conjunction with cellular bonding to provide a more reliable and consistent connection for streaming video and other data-intensive tasks.

Cellular bonding is a key technique for reliability in field production. Even as cellular networks have evolved from 3G to 4G and now 5G, bonding has remained an important tool for ensuring a consistent and reliable connection.

The ability to use more than one carrier, even if the technology is the same, and the ability to use two technologies at once, such as bonding 4G and 5G, can provide a redundancy that can ensure a reliable connection even in the event of network failure or congestion. Additionally, the ability to bond two connections within the same carrier and technology can provide a fail-safe mechanism in case of modem hardware failure, antenna position differences, or other issues.

Overall, cellular bonding is a proven technique for ensuring reliability in field production, and it can be used in conjunction with the latest cellular technologies, such as 5G, to provide even greater reliability and consistency.

Why Do I Need Cellular Bonding? https://news.broadfield.com/why-do-i-need-cellular-bonding/ Tue, 05 Oct 2021 15:18:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=19742 LiveU’s recent article explains LiveU’s history of cellular bonding and why cellular bonding is essential for broadcasters. Many live streamers do it all from the push of a button on their phone, but when they need a more robust solution an encoder like the LiveU Solo will do the trick.

History of Cellular Bonding

Twelve years ago: LiveU patented the first cellular bonding solution. This saved money on satellite and microwave trucks which brought on the attention on major news organizations. LiveU became the standard for news reporting.

Three years ago: LiveU took their cellular bonding technology and incorporated it into a smaller, plug-and-play encoder. This technology targeting the online streaming market, which we know today is growing by the day.

Today: So many people are live streaming, especially since the pandemic since it can bring people together at a distance. Streaming from your cell phone is good to get your foot in the door with live streaming, but a lot can go wrong.

We commonly hear people say “If I can go live on my cell phone, why do I need cellular bonding?” Short answer is, your one network cannot guarantee you will stream at the quality you want. Long answer is bandwidth is always fluctuating depending on different variables like your geographic location, people on the same network in your area, if you are inside or outside, and more. If the one network has little to no bandwidth your stream will either look pixelated or not even show up at all.

LiveU

Many content creators started streaming outdoors using their cell phones simply because there was no alternative way to do it that they were aware of OR other solution were just out of their price range. Besides the bandwidth issues that come with mobile streaming from your cell phone, other hiccups include someone calling your phone (yes, the phone you are using to stream!) which can disrupt the content or end the stream completely. What else? Your phone needs to be free so you can use it to interact with your community. Isn’t that what producing live is all about?

LiveU

The LiveU Solo uses cellular bonding technology (LRT) which adds reliability to video encoding. LiveU’s LRT technology will keep your stream in HD quality. Cellular bonding is what content creators need for it’s reliability and high quality.

Review: Teradek Vidiu X https://news.broadfield.com/review-teradek-vidiu-x/ Thu, 25 Mar 2021 15:19:47 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=18057 The Teradek VidiU X is an exciting new encoder similar to the VidiU Go and VidiU Pro that leverages cellular bonding as well as wired and wireless connections. This is a slightly simpler, more straight forward encoder when compared to the VidiU Go, unlocking a number of exciting streaming opportunities.

Anthony Burokas from StreamingMedia.com creates excellent in depth reviews of the latest and greatest streaming technology. His latest review of the VidiUX includes a great video as well as an article that delves into the details.

Check out the streamingmedia video, below.

Anthony Burokas provides an in-depth look at the Teradek Vidiu X Live Streaming Encoder.

Streaming Media

The front panel of the Vidiu X has a Record button and a four-way joystick. What is missing is the power button. When you plug in the Vidiu X, it powers up; when you pull the power out, it turns off, so they’ve simplified that aspect of it.

The first time you power on the Vidiu X, it will be set up in access point mode. That means is it is its own Wi-Fi hotspot, and it is broadcasting out. Then you access it through another device for the software. I’m using an iPad. In my Settings screen, I see VidiU X 00055 (Figure 1, below), which identifies the unit I’m reviewing. There is no Wi-Fi password, so the iPad will connect right to it. Then, when it is connected to this device, we can come back out and we launch the VidiU app, where we can connect to the Vidiu X.

Figure 1. The Vidiu X showing up in my Settings screen. Click the image to see it at full size.

Walkaround, Part 1

Let’s do a walkaround of the Vidiu X. Looking at the front panel of the unit (Figure 2, below), as mentioned earlier, on the left is the Record button and on the right is a four-way joystick. The joystick Is very fast, which is a great improvement over the VidiU Go. This joystick is super easy–the feedback, the feel of it.

Figure 2. The front panel of the Vidiu X

The first place you’ll want to navigate to with the joystick is the network settings. Top to bottom, you’ll see Modem, Wired, Wireless (Figure 3, below). When you navigate down to Wireless, you can see it’s set on access point. This is where, technically, you can do almost everything you need to do on the face of the unit. If you have an iPad or another device already connected to your WiFi, it’s easier to type in a complex password there than it is to go back and forth and deal with the teeny little screen. But in a pinch, it’s there and you can do it.

Figure 3. Network Options

Along the top of the unit, there are three lights: one for camera, one for cloud, and one for recording. On the unit’s left panel, you’ll find a USB port, which is for connecting your modem. Teradek makes high-end modems, but if you just have a hotspot, you can plug that in, and when the Vidiu X is powered up, it will power the modem. Also, if you wanted to, you could use a USB-to-ethernet adapter and plug in a second ethernet network and be connected to two completely separate ethernet networks for bonding, because there’s an ethernet port on the back. Also on the back panel, you’ve got HDMI in and HDMI out.

How LiveU Solo has become game-changing technology for Propixels India https://news.broadfield.com/how-liveu-solo-has-become-game-changing-technology-for-propixels-india/ Mon, 08 Jun 2020 22:00:48 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=15660

Here’s a great story from LiveU!

Propixels started their ambitious journey a year before the 2019 Indian General Elections where they teamed up with two leading political parties of Maharashtra – NCP & BJP covering every political event, including outdoor rallies, indoor conferences, live interviews and more. They shot to fame when they managed to flawlessly live stream the Sharad Pawar ‘Satara ki Sabha’ event in heavy rain using the LiveU Solo+ wireless encoder.

“It was a crucial event, and we did not switch off the camera and Solo+ unit even for a second. It eventually changed the entire political scenario of Maharashtra state. The challenges were overwhelming – heavy rain, huge crowds, and a remote village with limited bandwidth – but we managed to overcome them all. The event stream was picked up by all the regional, as well as national, news channels. After that, there was no turning back. We’ve used Solo for numerous similar events like Mahajanadesh Yatra – a campaign by Devendra Fadnavis where he traveled on a bus and visited every small village in Maharashtra. We live-streamed six such sessions each day and during this, we quickly grew from one unit on the first day to six on its third day”, said Sunny Jaiswal, Co-Founder of Propixels.

Jaiswal continued, “The best part about the LiveU Solo product is its ability to handle power fluctuations and functions without a single minute glitch even when there are multiple odds. Also, the fact that it has a great internal battery backup which eventually can be charged externally; we have a record of running this device constantly for many hours at one go. We have used Solo for an event in a record high temperature of 48 degrees Celsius in the Vidharba region of Maharashtra and the results were fantastic. Solo is super portable and user-friendly, and we carry it for overseas events as well.”

Other notable political events covered by Propixels using LiveU Solo+ devices are the Lokmat Parliamentary Award held in Delhi and Lokmat Maharashtrian of the Year Award. Currently, during lockdown times, they have been live streaming interviews from ministers’ homes.

Ranjit Bhatti, Director at LiveU – South Asia, said, “Our Solo device is really unique, and has seen a tremendous growth of usage in the country over the past couple of years. It has become the go-to device for people who want to live stream in professional-quality, an essential part of their production kit. We are very happy that the product is being used so extensively by the Propixels team for such important political and other events.”
