Panasonic LUMIX GH6 now supports Blackmagic RAW

Jose Antunes from ProVideoCoalition recently posted an article detailing how the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 now supports Blackmagic RAW. Panasonic quietly introduced a new update to its LUMIX GH6 this month, allowing the camera to record video in the Blackmagic Design RAW format, BRAW.

The LUMIX GH6 firmware version 2.3 provides users with access to a more flexible workflow. The mid-July firmware update allows the camera to output to a Blackmagic Design monitor/recorder ‘Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR’ over HDMI and save it as Blackmagic RAW. With the ability to record RAW video to a Blackmagic Design external recorder, LUMIX GH6 users now have two RAW options: the popular ProRes RAW and Blackmagic Design’s own BRAW.

The firmware update for the LUMIX GH6, which is available on the LUMIX Global Customer Support website, allows users to output 12-bit RAW video to a Blackmagic Design monitor/recorder in [5.7K], [C4K], [Anamorphic (4:3) 5.8K], or [Anamorphic (4:3) 4.4K]. The firmware update also adds 4K 120p/100p HDMI output support.

Panasonic advises those interested in the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR firmware version to visit the Blackmagic Design website, and that DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Resolve Studio is required to play back and edit Blackmagic RAW data.

Furthermore, when the [Rec Quality] is set to 5.7K/60p (50p) or C4K/120p (100p) and recording to a Blackmagic Design recorder, it is recommended that the codec quality on the recorder be set to the following:

When recording to an SSD, maintain a constant bitrate of 5:1 or less.
When recording to an SD card, maintain a constant bitrate of 8:1 or less.

The latest firmware update confirms what Panasonic’s marketing says about this release: “through firmware updates, Panasonic delivers future-ready solutions for more flexible filmmaking workflow using mirrorless cameras.”

ATOMOS: NEW PRICE FOR THE NINJA AND FREE UPDATE

Atomos recently announced a free upgrade to enable CDNG Raw recording from select Sony, Canon and Panasonic cameras and a new low price on the Ninja Inferno.

Timed with the release of the Panasonic GH5, the new low price of the Ninja Inferno will, as Atomos says “empower the masses”. There is also an update for different monitors.

Available from today, the free upgrade available to download enables CDNG Raw recording from select Sony, Canon and Panasonic cameras on the Shogun Inferno,Shogun Flame and the original Shogun products. Not only are these the worlds’ first monitor-recorders to offer CDNG recording on a single SSD, they are also the world’s first monitor-recorders to offer CDNG Raw to end users for free, says Atomos.

CDNG records Raw images from a camera’s sensor as a sequence of individual frames rather than video, allowing users to recreate a Hollywood post production process allowing custom control over white balance, noise reduction & debayering rather than relying on the camera’s real time processing. Unlike video, the Raw from each camera brand is different, offering different advantages to the user and requiring bespoke engineering for each Raw format in the recorder itself. For this release, Atomos have enabled Sony Raw recording from the FS700 / FS7 / FS5, Canon Raw recording from the C300MKII / C500 and Panasonic Raw recording from the Varicam LT.

“We are very proud and excited to break yet another industry convention by offering Raw recording for free from our great partners Sony, Canon and Panasonic”, said Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos.

Atomos also reduced the price of its Ninja Inferno monitor to $995, bringing the power of 4Kp60 10-bit ProRes recording and HDR monitoring to the GH5. The information provided by Atomos suggests that “just as the original Atomos Ninja broke open DSLR filmmaking by giving the Canon 5DMKIII professional Apple ProRes recording & the original Atomos Shogun pioneered 4K with the Sony a7s and Panasonic GH4, the Ninja Inferno now arms the Panasonic GH5, the hottest camera of 2017, with HDR Apple Pro-Res 10-bit 4:2:2 4Kp60 over HDMI 2.0 – a feat not possible internally on the GH5. This marks another incredible Atomos breakthrough – professional 10-bit color resolution, 4:2:2 color accuracy, high frame rate 4K 60p video resolution & all with the incredible brightness range that HDR delivers in PQ or HLG.”

Apart from being an obvious companion for the new GH5, the Ninja Inferno accepts, says Atomos, “4K DCI signals from cameras like the Panasonic GH4 / DVX200 / HCX1000 / UX180 / HCX1, Sony FS7 / Z100 and the JVC LS300. Support for the 4096 DCI standard unlocks cinema recording from these 4K video & mirrorless DSLRs.”

“Our message to video Pro’s is to go HDR 4Kp60 today, as showcased by the GH5 and Ninja Inferno combo”, said Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos. “For less than $3k it’s an unbeatable total package especially when considering having 4K HDR content ready for clients, Netflix and YouTube is a must”.

Atomos Says These Log Profiles Make Old Canon DSLRs HDR-Ready

Atomos is helping breathe new life into some old cameras, helping promote a set of log picture profiles that help expand the available dynamic range of footage recorded from the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Mark IV and other models with clean HDMI output. Atomos is calling it an HDR upgrade for Canon DSLRs.

The ,pf3 picture profiles were developed by cinematographer James Miller and include a basic “CLOG Neutral” profile and a “more Canon-style” CLOG 3 profile. Each comes with a number of corresponding .cube LUTs and other options. Atomos saw the ability to record increased dynamic range as an opportunity to promote its Inferno and Flame recorders, which feature HDR-ready software, display more than 10 stops on their included seven-inch monitors, and record the clean HDMI output of Canon DSLRs to ProRes files. The HDMI output is only 8-bit, but the big benefit of recording externally from a DSLR is the elimination of heavy compression that’s applied to files recorded in camera. The benefits of Canon Log recording drove many cinema-style shooters to the EOS-1D C, which launched way back in 2012. Since then, users have lamented Canon’s decision not to support it on any other DSLRs.

PluralEyes Allows You to Sync Audio

I did a brief tutorial on PluralEyes, by Singular Software and how you can use the software to sync audio from multiple camera sources and line up audio tracks, like I did for the video below. I highly recommend this software as it cuts down on editing time/workflow.
