Advanced Systems Group (ASG), a full-service production and post-production value added reseller in California recently collaborated with California’s Del Norte Unified School District (DNUSD) to create a remote solution to help the school district live stream sports, academic events and other activities. Since COVID restrictions were put in place, DNUSD wanted to create a live stream system to keep the community connected.

“We’re a small, rural community with a huge, diehard community of superfans and a lot of senior citizens who’ve lived here their entire lives and follow the school events. We’d been thinking of creating a live streaming system like this for a long time. Last summer, the State of California limited the number of guests who could attend graduation ceremonies and large events. The graduation date became our deadline to get this done. We wanted to get this set up for everyone in time for graduation and beyond.”

Michael Hawkins, director of communications, DNUSD

The setup included 14 BirdDog PTZ NDI Cameras which we helped distribute to ASG. The 14 cameras were spread throughout the campus with staff directing the streaming output from one central operations center. ASG choose BirdDog’s PTZ Cameras because of their fully featured NDI capabilities and because they offer outdoor PTZ cameras which DNUSD required. BirdDog’s A200 and A300 outdoor weatherproof cameras are perfect for the field and their P200 PTZ cameras are perfect for the classroom.

This is a fantastic showcase of the power of NDI and BirdDog PTZ cameras. We’re humbled that our gear played a part in enabling these important human connections through the pandemic.”

Eamon Drew, co-founder and CMO of BirdDog.

This live streaming setup was used for multiple school events including their 2022-22 football season. When the school received positive feedback from offering virtual events, they decided to install another five BirdDog PTZ cameras for their outdoor and indoor sports.

When creating the live streaming setup, range, durability and video quality were some of the top priorities to Hawkins team.

NDI was the initial draw to the BirdDog cameras because we’re very rural. We have 4,500 students in the largest geographic school district in the state. In terms of durability, there are no other PTZ camera built as solid as these. With all the wind and rain we get in the Pacific Northwest, that was important to us. And the video quality is full NDI, which is unlike most PTZ models. We have the network to handle it, so we want to make our coverage as good as possible.”

Ryan Bahten, director of information network services, DNUSD

DNUSD is not done yet. They are planning to build out their streaming capacity to more schools in the district. Hawkins says “Currently, we have three cameras in the Crescent Elk Middle School Auditorium. At Del Norte High School, there are multiple indoor cameras installed for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. For our outdoor sports at Del Norte High, we have cameras at our soccer, baseball, softball, and football fields. We are currently in the process of installing cameras at our outdoor tennis courts and near our track fields. After we finish these installations, we plan on building out streaming capacity at all of our middle schools across the county to begin offering live-streaming to our community and career technical education to students interested in broadcasting and live-streaming.”

Kudos to ASG for helping DNUSD keep their community connected!

Review: Matrox Monarch LCS Lecture Capture Appliance https://news.broadfield.com/review-matrox-monarch-lcs-lecture-capture-appliance/ Tue, 06 Jul 2021 20:15:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=19030 The Matrox Monarch LCS is perfect for educators looking for a versatile lecture capture solution. With the emphasis on hybrid learning, schools and universities are looking for solutions that will allow them to broadcast their classes anywhere, at anytime, with ease. The Monarch LCS is just that. Education Technology reviews this easy to use, fully-featured device. Check out some highlights below.

The first question they’ll ask, “What platform is Monarch LCS compatible with?” The good news: the device is compatible with most Video Management Systems (VMSs) – including Kaltura, Presentations2Go, Streamitup and Ubicast, as well as Learning Management Systems (LMSs)/Virtual Learning environments (VLEs), including Moodle, Blackboard, Brightspace and Canvas. What does this mean? Monarch LCS is ready to integrate seamlessly into almost any existing infrastructure. Furthermore, with its compact size, the encoder makes it an ideal fit for any storage rack that can be installed discreetly within the classroom. Its metal frame also makes it extremely hard-wearing.

Education Technology

The Monarch LCS gives you multiple destination options when streaming or recording. When the device is set to record, an encoding channel captures H.264 content in MOV or MP4 files, meaning that your video files will play on virtually any player. You can also record files locally to an SD card or USB attached storage and transfer those files over the network or via FTP/sFTP at a later time, thus reducing network congestion during peak times, or worse, the potential of losing files in transit due to connectivity issues. Alternatively, you can record lectures to USB drives, SD cards, or network-mapped drives and have them made available immediately to your school’s virtual management system (VMS). For streaming purposes, the encoders use either RTMP or RTSP protocol to deliver live streams to local media servers or cloud-based CDNs.

Education Technology

Final verdict: the Monarch LCS lecture capture appliance will comfortably cover all your bases when it comes to recording and streaming content anywhere, anytime — and with exemplary sound and picture quality.

Oregon State University Survey of Lecture Capture Hardware, Software, and Platforms https://news.broadfield.com/oregon-state-university-survey-of-lecture-capture-hardware-software-and-platforms/ Tue, 14 Jul 2020 15:30:14 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=15938 One of the most common refrains in any institution’s academic technology department is “What should we use for lecture capture?” The answer to this question, unfortunately, is not at all clear cut, mostly because it’s hard to compare solutions. Features vary wildly from one manufacturer to the next, and implementation of those features can be nuanced (i.e. “Yes, of course my product can do that*” *with considerable development resources and professional services).

Featured hardware from Matrox & Epiphan:

A reasonable solution for a large scale deployment, Matrox’s Monarch LCS device is small and so affordable as to be nearly disposable. The Monarch LCS has the ability to record or stream two isolated sources. Mix and match to your liking. Streaming options include both RTSP and RTMP. The ability to do two isolated recordings makes the Monarch LCS Open Capture compatible (a standard supported by Kaltura) and also integrates with a number of scheduling solutions, including Kaltura’s. Large institutions with a robust internal support unit will benefit most from this solution as you might find the Monarch LCS needs a lot of babysitting, which is where Matrox’s true killer app comes in handy: Radar, Matrox’s dashboard software, is available for free and installs on a Windows box, allowing you to monitor and administer your fleet in an at-a-glance interface.

Epiphan offers a premium lecture capture solution. Their devices have a clean, intuitive interface and integrate easily into many ecosystems, including Kaltura, through it’s scheduling and Open Capture protocols. The Pearl devices carry a touchscreen for operating the device, but also doubles as a confidence monitor. But the touchscreen makes the Pearl pricier than its competitors.

The State of Video in Higher Education https://news.broadfield.com/the-state-of-video-in-higher-education/ Thu, 30 Apr 2020 17:21:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=15370 As technology moves forward, video has a bigger place in higher education. And, with social distancing in full effect, live streaming is now finding it’s way into the classroom or lecture hall as well.

Check out some highlights from this article from streamingmedia.com on video’s place in higher education.

Even before the COVID-19 crisis, we had reached the point where the video landscape for education is mature and largely swept clear of skeptics. Few teachers and administrators still doubt that educational video can enhance student experiences—fully online video-based instruction is broadly accepted as an effective mode of lecturing.

Actual proof for these beliefs is somewhat harder to find, though, due to the confounding nature of real-world research limitations. Plenty of studies have been published showing that students learn material about as well—or even better—from video than from in-person lectures, but almost all are comparing college students, who are presumably savvy and resourceful learners under any circumstances. The availability of video resources tends to increase alongside the engagement level of the student body: Competitive universities will have better access to video services than public high schools, and university researchers studying impacts of video on learning outcomes will have better access to their own students than to less academically inclined students who may have a greater challenge learning from video.

Anecdotally, though, educational video appears to be finding an audience outside of formal schools, with many popular and highly informative YouTube channels devoted to auto repair, construction, and other skilled technical labor. An exemplar of the state of learning-outcomes research is a 2019 journal article from Judith L. Leatherman and Lacy M. Cleveland, which describes a flipped classroom experience for a genetics course. It shows that student learning outcomes were roughly the same as for comparable non-flipped classes, while investigating the confounding elements that make it difficult to attribute the results of the study specifically to video. As always, more research is needed, and the ubiquity of video in schools will help produce more results and guide best practices in the next year and decade.

Panopto vs Kaltura https://news.broadfield.com/panopto-vs-kaltura/ Fri, 07 Feb 2020 14:35:26 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14777 Epiphan’s Pearl Mini has gained a lot of traction in the education markets recently with the addition of integrations for Panopto and Kaltura. Take a look at this article from Epiphan detailing the difference between these applications, below.

When looking for a Video Content Management System (VCMS) for your university or business, two big names jump out: Kaltura and Panopto. Both offer rich video management solutions that deliver Cadillac services with plenty of bells and whistles from interactive quizzing and multiple-source recordings to accessibility features like captions and in-video searching. These video solutions do it all.

This article unravels the Kaltura out-of-the-box features and add ons for education and business, then dives into the Panopto video solution to give you more insight into these VMCS solutions.

Kaltura

What is Kaltura for business and education?

The Kaltura video solution consists of a video platform and a wide range of products that enable users to create and edit videos, manage video assets at scale in a searchable library, securely share videos across the organization and out over the Internet, as well as do deep video analytics.

Kaltura’s out-of-the-box video solution is easily customizable for a branded experience. There’s an extensive selection of add on products to custom fit Kaltura to your specific video workflow needs, including integrations with popular Content Management Systems (CMSs) and Learning Management Systems (LMSs). Products are available for live streaming and other interesting functions like transcribing. Kaltura’s platform is fully integrated with global tier-1 CDNs such as Akamai, AWS, and Tata Communications or a CDN of your choice. There’s also an eCDN solution.

Kaltura can record meetings and lectures from any office space or classroom. Multiple source recordings can be automatically published to LMSs. Uploaded content can be enriched with features like like captioning, video quizzes, and advanced metadata using the integrated Kaltura platform and products.

The Kaltura SaaS Edition video solution is hosted in the cloud with various licensing options. For high security applications, Kaltura also offers a full On-Premise Edition, which supports flexible hybrid SaaS/On-premise deployment options. A free, self-hosted version called Kaltura Community Edition is also available for developers willing to integrate Kaltura using the available open source code. In addition, there’s an API-based Video Platform as a Service (VPaaS) solution for developers and tech platforms to build their own video solutions using Kaltura’s APIs, SDKs, and developer tools. Of course, for anybody not wanting to invest in developing their own video solution, the out-of-the-box Kaltura SaaS video solution is the deployment option to go with.

Panopto

What is Panopto?

Panopto is an industry-leading SaaS Video Content Management System (VCMS) / online video portal for businesses and educational institutions. It’s hosted in the cloud and supports elastic scaling, which adjusts as usage and storage needs change. Features include in-video Smart Search of all video assets across the library, multiple-source recording, webcasting, customizable interactive multiple-view player, auto-synchronization and indexing of slide presentations, custom thumbnails, a video editing tool, quizzing, captions, analytics, bulk uploads, and more. Panopto is an “all-in” video solution that’s packaged as a single web-based application, whereas Kaltura offers a suite of “pick-and-choose” add ons for a customizable video solution. Free mobile apps are also available. There’s the Panopto Mobile app for iPhone and iPad, as well as the Panopto for Android app.
