The Power of Remote Production: Producing JAB Holding Company’s Two-Day Investor’s Conference from 2 Global Studios & 4 Remote Locations https://news.broadfield.com/the-power-of-remote-production-producing-jab-holding-companys-two-day-investors-conference-from-2-global-studios-4-remote-locations/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=27492 The blog post delves into the intricacies of Gradient Experience’s remote production of JAB Holding Company’s two-day Investor’s Conference, shedding light on the challenges faced and the innovative solutions implemented to create an engaging and high-quality virtual experience for a global audience.

JAB Holding Company, an international conglomerate with investments in various sectors such as consumer goods, coffee, luxury fashion, animal health, and fast food, hosts an annual Investor’s Day Meeting since 2020. This two-day conference serves as a platform for CEOs from leading brands within the JAB portfolio to outline business initiatives, strategies, revenue details, key learnings, and future short-term and long-term goals for investors and shareholders worldwide.

With 32 C-Level speakers participating from two studios and four remote locations, the Gradient Experience team recognized the need for a flexible and scalable live solution. Leveraging LiveU technology for live feeds and live-to-tape content within a 3D virtual world created with Unreal and Brainstorm, Gradient aimed to create a production that would not only meet but exceed the expectations of the 200+ attendees spanning across 30+ countries.

The primary challenge was to design a workflow that accommodated the diverse needs of CEO presenters located globally. The solution involved integrating LiveU at the core of the production model, allowing Gradient to bring C-Level Executives from different offices directly into the virtual program being cut live from the London-based control room. Notably, the virtual world created for this production showcased the use of cutting-edge technology, providing a visually immersive experience for participants.

The flexibility of the hybrid remote production model became evident when faced with last-minute changes in scheduling. Corey Protin, Head of Livestream & Studios at Gradient, emphasized the adaptability afforded by LiveU, stating that when a guest couldn’t physically attend the London green screen facility, a LiveU encoder was used alongside the LiveU LU4000 4K/quad HD rack-mount receiver to seamlessly integrate the presenter into the production without compromising quality.

The results were impressive, demonstrating that audiences today expect the flexibility of remote participation while still desiring the quality associated with in-person events. The collaboration between Gradient Experience and LiveU resulted in an upscaled virtual production that went beyond the typical Zoom meeting aesthetic, providing a more enriched and immersive experience for participants. This success not only met the immediate needs of JAB Holding Company’s Investor’s Conference but also showcased a highly repeatable and scalable model for future events, setting a new standard for virtual productions.

How Can I Setup An SRT Destination on LiveU Solo? https://news.broadfield.com/how-can-i-setup-an-srt-destination-on-liveu-solo/ Thu, 13 Apr 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=25130 In an recent article on LiveU, they tell us how to set up an SRT stream destination for the LiveU Solo or Solo PRO on firmware 7.2.

Select the SRT Caller Destination Type

Add a new destination to your unit, and select SRT-OUT-Caller-Solo as your destination type:

Set Your SRT Information

Once you select that, you will get some SRT options to set:

Here is a breakdown of each parameter you should set:

  1. Destination Name: like other destination this is used only internally on the portal, to help you find and set the destination a second time
  2. Primary URL: this is your SRT destination information.  It will take the format of srt://192.168.1.1:22000But, you will replace “192.168.1.1” in this example with the IP address, or domain name, of your target.  If you are sending SRT to yourself, this would be your own external IP address.  The “22000” in this example is the port, and you should specify a port to use (unlike RTMP, SRT has no real “default” port).
  3. Stream ID: similar to “Stream Key” in RTMP, this identifies your stream and should be provided by the platform you are streaming to.  However, if you are streaming to your own software (like vMix), just input any value here as it won’t be used by some software such as vMix
  4. Passphrase (Optional): different from Stream ID, this is a passphrase to encrypt your stream.  Use it if your target platform or software needs it, or if you want to your stream encrypted (but make sure the receive side is setup to use the same passphrase as well)
  5. Latency: This is the SRT latency to set.  It should be about twice the round trip time between the LiveU Cloud and your destination – but its hard to know what that number is! for Most destinations on the internet, the default of 500ms should be just fine.  If you know your destination is for any reason hard to reach, or you find the stream unstable, try a higher value here.
  6. Codec: here you can choose, on Solo PRO only between H.264 (the default) or HEVC.

Once you set these values, save the destination just like you would other Solo destinations.

Hardware vs. Software Encoding: Which is better for Live Streaming? https://news.broadfield.com/hardware-vs-software-encoding-which-is-better-for-live-streaming/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=24807 YoloLiv recently posted an article to their blog detailing the strengths and weaknesses of different types of streaming encoders. The video encoder is an essential component of any streaming setup as it converts the video data from a camera or other source into a format that can be transmitted over the internet for streaming.

What is a Video Encoder?

Without a video encoder, you won’t be able to stream your video content to platforms like Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook, as these platforms require a video stream in a specific format to be able to display it to viewers. The encoder takes the raw video data from the source and compresses it into a digital format that can be easily transmitted over the internet.

There are different types of video encoders available, including software encoders that can run on your computer, and hardware encoders that are separate devices that you can connect to your computer or camera. Both types of encoders have their own advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right one depends on your specific streaming needs.

Software Encoder

Software encoders use software running on a computer or mobile device to encode video files. They can capture audio and video inputs from cameras, microphones, or other sources and deliver them to streaming platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch.

Software encoders offer greater flexibility and versatility than hardware encoders since they can be used on any device with sufficient processing power and memory. They also tend to be more cost-effective than hardware encoders since they do not require additional hardware.

There are many software encoders available, ranging from basic tools for home users to professional applications used by media companies. Some popular software encoders include OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, Wirecast, and vMix. The choice of software encoder depends on factors such as the user’s technical expertise, the level of features needed, and the available budget.

Hardware Encoder

Hardware encoders use dedicated chips or processors to perform the video encoding as an independent device. They are often used in professional settings such as live streaming and broadcasting, where high-quality video and low latency are essential.

Hardware encoders can offer advantages such as higher performance, better video quality, and lower latency compared to software encoders. They are also more reliable since they use dedicated hardware components designed specifically for video encoding.

One example of a hardware encoder is the YoloBox Pro. It is an all-in-one live production system that can simultaneously stream to multiple destinations such as Facebook, YouTube, and other RTMP(S) websites. It includes built-in battery and 4G connectivity, allowing you to stream from anywhere to everywhere.

Which is Better for Live Streaming?

When it comes to choosing between software and hardware encoders for live streaming, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Both types of encoders have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between them depends on various factors, such as the required video quality, available budget, and level of technical expertise.

Pros and Cons of Software Encoder

pros:

  • Cost-effectiveness: generally it is less expensive than hardware encoders, and usually has monthly paid solutions.
  • Compatibility: It is compatible with a broad range of devices and platforms, making it accessible to large users.
  • Software updates: It is easy to add new features by updating the software

Cons:

  • Quality: it may produce lower-quality output than hardware encoders, particularly when encoding at high bitrates or using complex encoding settings.
  • Reliability: it is more prone to errors or crashes than hardware encoders, particularly if the computer running the software encoder is under heavy load.
  • Resource-intensive: it requires a powerful computer with plenty of RAM and processing power to achieve optimal performance.

Pros and Cons of Hardware Encoder

Pros:

  • Reliability: You don’t need to worry about the screen freezes of your laptop and losing your data.
  • Efficiency: Performing and encoding much faster than software encoders, resulting in lower CPU usage and better overall performance.
  • Quality: it can produce higher-quality output than software encoders, particularly when it comes to video encoding.
  • Lower Latency: it is specifically designed to minimize latency and provide real-time encoding. This makes them ideal for live streaming applications where low latency is essential.

Cons:

  • Upgrade challenges: Upgrading a hardware encoder is more difficult than upgrading software. It may require the addition of new hardware components or the replacement of the entire unit.
  • Cost: It comes with a high cost, especially for professional-grade models.
  • Limited customization: It has limited customization options, and users may not be able to fine-tune the encoding parameters to achieve the desired output quality.
