How Adobe’s Firefly Video Model is Set to Change the Game for Video Editing https://news.broadfield.com/how-adobes-firefly-video-model-is-set-to-change-the-game-for-video-editing/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=30000 In this article by Jourdan Aldredge for NoFilmSchool, the author explores how Adobe’s new AI-powered Firefly video model is poised to revolutionize video editing across its suite of applications, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io. As Adobe unveiled these updates during the 2024 Adobe MAX conference in Miami, the Firefly model promises significant advancements in features like Generative Extend, offering solutions to some of the most persistent challenges faced by video editors.

One of the standout features introduced is the beta version of Generative Extend, which allows editors to create new frames and extend the duration of clips seamlessly. This function is designed to fill gaps, smooth out transitions, and hold on shots for more precise edits, effectively simplifying a task that would typically require more effort and manual adjustment. With the power of AI, Firefly also enables extended audio edits by generating ambient “room tone” to bridge transitions.

The article highlights additional improvements across Adobe’s video editing tools. Premiere Pro now features an advanced color management system that supports high fidelity HDR and SDR transformations, enhanced speed with faster ProRes exports, and a streamlined interface. In After Effects, integration with Substance 3D empowers designers to import and work with 3D models more easily, enhancing the creative scope for motion graphics and visual effects. Meanwhile, Frame.io introduces more collaborative tools, including enhanced workflows and tighter review loops, making it easier for teams to manage complex projects.

How GMedia tells great stories in no time with Camera to Cloud https://news.broadfield.com/how-gmedia-tells-great-stories-in-no-time-with-camera-to-cloud/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=27431 In the blog post “How GMedia tells great stories in no time with Camera to Cloud” by Atomos for Videomaker, the creative agency for Green Machine Ensembles at George Mason University, uses a Camera to Cloud (C2C) workflow to streamline their video production process. Senior producer Joshua Cruse shares his experiences and highlights the advantages of this innovative approach:

Joshua Cruse, a musician turned videographer, started capturing musical performances at George Mason University with a simple camera. As GMedia evolved, he built a team to capture various events, from candid shots to social media content.

Before adopting the C2C workflow, GMedia faced challenges with traditional video production, including long wait times for media off-loading and the struggle to keep up with evolving post-production needs.

The transition to C2C began with the integration of Atomos Connect module for Ninja and Frame.io, tools already in use by GMedia. The continuity of using Atomos devices from the late 2010s to the mid-2020s provided a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

C2C significantly improved the workflow by allowing near-instant file uploads to Frame.io through Atomos Cloud Studio. This accelerated the editing process, enabling the team to create quick social media edits and meet tight deadlines.

Josh emphasizes the value of time as a non-renewable resource and highlights how C2C has made the team’s life easier. The C2C workflow includes Atomos monitor-recorders with C2C connectivity, providing accessibility from anywhere.

A real-world example from April 2023 illustrates the flexibility of C2C. When a team member couldn’t attend an on-site production due to injury, they remotely edited footage in near real-time, showcasing the adaptability of the workflow.

For GMedia, C2C is not just a short-term solution but a transformative way of creating content efficiently. The workflow saves time, promotes collaboration, and ensures a quick turnaround without compromising recording quality.

In conclusion, GMedia is committed to using C2C as long as Frame.io and Atomos support it, signifying the enduring impact of this innovative workflow on their storytelling process.

How Premiere Pro’s Text-Based Editing Transformed My Filmmaking https://news.broadfield.com/how-premiere-pros-text-based-editing-transformed-my-filmmaking/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=26797 In her blog post for Frame.io Insider, Sandra Lucille discusses the challenges documentary editors face and the transformative impact of Adobe Premiere Pro’s new Text-Based Editing feature. Documentary editors, responsible for crafting narratives from vast amounts of footage, audio, and interviews, often relied on time-consuming and inefficient methods for selecting sound bites and creating a storyline.

Historically, editors had to create timecoded transcripts, print them out, and manually highlight and annotate them. They would then go back into Premiere Pro to locate corresponding phrases in the footage, a labor-intensive process. However, Adobe’s Text-Based Editing feature changed the game, allowing editors to use transcribed text as the primary representation of audio or video content. This feature enabled them to see, edit, rearrange, add, or remove sentences in the transcript, with the text edits automatically synchronized with the audio or video.

This new approach, particularly beneficial for documentary editors, streamlined the workflow, making it easier to navigate interviews and restructure story elements quickly. Editors could use the Text panel to initiate Speech-to-Text transcription, and the transcript would sync with the audio and video. This synchronization allowed for real-time tracking of spoken words in the transcript, simplifying content navigation.

Editors could create sequences for sound bite selects and use Text-Based Editing to find, select, and insert phrases into these sequences. The selected phrases were added as multicam excerpts, making the process much more efficient.

Sandra shared her experience using this new workflow on a specific project and highlighted how it allowed her to work more creatively and imaginatively. She also discussed how it improved the process of creating a radio edit, a phase where the editor lays out all the audio components of the narrative. With Text-Based Editing, she could easily find alternatives for specific words and refine the intonation of dialogue to enhance the narrative flow.

Additionally, the feature made it easier to remove unnecessary sound bites or words, resulting in a stronger story with fewer words. Sandra emphasized the ability to create harmony between interview subjects’ answers and smoothly transition sound bites by adding keywords, ultimately improving the overall storytelling process.

The Bear’s Production Team Used Adobe Premiere Pro and Frame.io to put this hit series on the road https://news.broadfield.com/the-bears-production-team-used-adobe-premiere-pro-and-frame-io-to-put-this-hit-series-on-the-road/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 18:57:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=26643
The production of The Bear demonstrates a seamless integration of creative elements and technical innovations, showcasing the power of modern editing tools and collaborative platforms. In an article written on RedShark, they share how the use of Adobe Premiere Pro’s Productions features, along with cloud-based editing facilitated by LucidLink, played a crucial role in enabling remote teams to work together efficiently and effectively. The integration of cloud-based technologies not only streamlined the editing process but also allowed for real-time collaboration and communication among team members located in different cities.

The emphasis on audio editing within Adobe Premiere Pro highlights the importance of sound design in creating an immersive viewing experience. By incorporating ambient sounds and manipulating audio creatively, the editors were able to capture the bustling atmosphere of the commercial kitchen, enhancing the overall narrative and providing viewers with a deeper sense of engagement with the show.

The utilization of Frame.io for collaboration and real-time feedback during the audio mix further exemplifies the significance of streamlined communication in the post-production process. By facilitating efficient discussions and eliminating potential confusion, Frame.io contributed to maintaining a cohesive workflow and ensuring that all team members were well-informed and updated throughout the production.

Overall, the success of The Bear can be attributed not only to its compelling storyline and characters but also to the innovative use of editing technologies and collaborative platforms, as well as the meticulous attention to detail in sound design and post-production.

Connected Filmmaking Webinar: C2C and the Atomos CONNECT Family https://news.broadfield.com/connected-filmmaking-webinar-c2c-and-the-atomos-connect-family/ Fri, 21 Apr 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=25203 At Frame.io, they have established a number of very close alliances with software and hardware businesses whose impact on the filmmaking industry is evident. From portable on-camera displays to HDR studio-grade monitor-recorders, Atomos, one of these partners, undoubtedly caters to the greatest range of camera operators and content producers.

In light of this, they were thrilled when Atomos’ SVP Paul Scurrell and John Restivo agreed to introduce them to their newest products in the CONNECT family and explain how they were created to work with Camera to Cloud.

Paul, a specialist in wireless sync technology, joined Atomos from Timecode Systems. In addition, he has extensive expertise in broadcast television, including time spent at the BBC. As a result, he brings a lot of knowledge about production and live settings to his current position.

Shawn’s first question for Paul at the 10:48 mark is “where does Atomos fit into all of this?” Because it seems that, with a wide range of products targeting an enormous cross section of use cases, Atomos can be a tricky company to define. But as Paul explains, everything they do falls into one of three groups:

  • Monitor-only. Like the 5” Shinobi HDR Photo and Video Monitor.
  • Monitor-recorders. Like the Ninja V and Ninja V+ models.
  • Connected monitor-recorders. Like the brand new Zato CONNECT

This last category isn’t a new move for Atomos, as they started developing connected devices around three years ago. As Paul puts it at the 12-minute mark, Atomos looked at the foundational technologies at the core of their business, and asked what Atomos might do to support tomorrow’s productions.

The Atomos CONNECT Family

As a result of this foresight, a variety of solutions, including the Shogun CONNECT, the Atomos CONNECT, and the new Zato CONNECT, are prepared to handle today’s network- and cloud-connected processes. Paul is more than happy to display all of them at the 14:17 mark.

The Shogun CONNECT, which integrates a complete WiFi 6 networking solution into the already-existing Shogun feature set, is, in essence, Atomos’ flagship product. This features recording in a variety of file formats on reasonably priced solid state storage, a 2000-nit, 7-inch HDR screen, SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs, and more.

Additionally, the Shogun CONNECT features AirGlu, a special Atomos technology that combines long-range RF and Bluetooth technology and adds powerful wireless timecode, sync, and control functions to the mix. As Paul explains, “For a camera-to-cloud workflow you could have fully synchronized, separate audio and other sources coming in, and know that everything has exactly the same matching timecodes.”

The Atomos CONNECT, an add-on module for the Atomos Ninja and Ninja V+, includes AirGlu as well. Because of this, owners of these older models can easily implement cloud-connected workflows without having to upgrade their hardware.

And lastly, Paul demonstrates the all-new Zato CONNECT at the 18:32 mark, which is Atomos’ entry-point product for cloud-connected workflows. Despite this low price, Paul describes it as “an absolute powerhouse” featuring webcam and HDMI inputs and outputs combined with a WiFi 5 chipset and tools like graphic overlays. A compelling mix for streamers and content creators.
