Inroducing VR Presets in Premiere Pro: Presets up to 8K 

Adobe is focusing its attention towards supporting VR and content creators, with video presets for VR able to support up to 8K by 4K 360° footage in Premiere Pro.

Most of these features are powered by Adobe’s artificial intelligence and machine learning framework, Adobe Sensei, which was launched about a year ago.

First, Adobe says that motion graphic templates in After Effects will be easier to access because now editors can pull templates right from Adobe Stock and through Creative Cloud Libraries.

Adobe’s Character Animator 1.0 is also getting an update. Adobe reports that there will be changes to its core animation functions, which include pose-to-pose blending, new physics behaviors and visual puppet controls. And Adobe’s AI, Sensei, is suppose to help improve lip-syncing by matching you character model’s mouth shapes with your spoken audio….

Atomos opened their IBC 2017 presence with their new Atomos Sumo19M HDR Production monitor, which we posted about here, and now they also announced the new lineup of Atomos Connect Converter devices aimed not just at broadcasters, but also live events such as concerts. The new Atomos Connect Convert line comes colour coded and forms a comprehensive and versatile lineup of 15 different conversion, signal processing and system integration boxes that connect, convert, scale, sync, split and repeat your video signals. The new lineup of Connect converters is not to be confused with the already existing Connect H2S HDMI to SDI and visa versa.

The new lineup of Connect Convert devices feature a robust construction with locking DC and HDMI connectors, USB power and detachable mounting ears. Status is clearly displayed on bright LEDs and they can be quickly and easily configured using the free ConnectOS software. It’s no exaggeration, although it might be a little clichéd, to say that we are currently enjoying a golden age of TV. Or, to be more precise, a golden age of content, with the advent of mobile devices creating more viewing options. Conventional broadcasters are upping their game to compete with new-kids-on-the-block Netflix, Google and Amazon, who in turn are investing heavily in original series production. Who knew? Despite fears about how the online interlopers might disturb the broadcast equilibrium, it appears that the entertainment industry isn’t a zero sum game.

The statistics bear this out – take a look at this recent study by FX Networks of scripted original series. Although conventional broadcast dipped a little in 2016, the growth in online services – over 100%, year on year – far outstrips that small decline.

So, this is all great news for content creators, yes? Well, there is a sting in the tail. The growth in connected 4K/UHD consumer TVs and mobile devices, combined with better and better broadband coverage is rapidly connecting the dots in the value chain to make 4K/UHD a key differentiator for online providers like Netflix. So, the knock-on effect is that post-production studios have to up their game too, to equip their facilities for 4K/UHD production.
