Background
Once a quiet mill town, Hudson, MA has blossomed into a vibrant community of 20,000 people, a bustling downtown, and must-see attractions. The Hudson Police Department prides itself on improving the quality of life for all citizens by providing a safe and secure environment rooted in community outreach and engagement. Technology plays a key role in the department’s mission.

The Solution
The department has been utilizing drones for situational awareness for several years. They recently implemented LiveU technology to enhance their operations and increase their speed to respond.

The LiveU field encoder is typically used for overwatch for special events to ensure increased safety of the community. In other instances, the department has leveraged the technology for arrest and search warrants. The LiveU IP-video field encoder powers the transmission of live feeds from the OJI Matrice 30T and Mavic 3T drones to the department’s communications center and field personnel, leveraging the LiveU Video Return platform for training, simulations, and crisis response.

The Results
The LiveU unit has proven critical in Law Enforcement (LE) missions.  The department received a call about some minors looking to cars in a location stricken with multiple stolen car reports. A drone was deployed to evaluate the situation, which found that the youths were simply playing a hide-and-seek game near the cars. This gave the department visibility into what was actually happening, which in turn, saved time and resources, without compromising anyone’s safety.

Late last summer, Rahn’s regional team was activated to increase security measures for the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) fundraising bike-a-thon to benefit the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute. Hudson PD provided overwatch for the event as cyclists gathered the night before to check in their gear. Rahn’s team was using the LiveU field unit to provide video streaming to a mobile command center and supervisors. “Using drones, we were able to help ensure the safety of over 6,000 riders and their gear as it was being secured for the ride to Cape Cod the next morning,” noted Rahn.

LiveU has helped the Hudson PD become more efficient in the field. They foresee more success stories around LiveU, drones, and overwatch, which will help them maintain safety and security for its officers and the community they serve.

LiveU ecosystem drives surge in live IP video for 2024 US election, doubling 2020 usage https://news.broadfield.com/liveu-ecosystem-drives-surge-in-live-ip-video-for-2024-us-election-doubling-2020-usage/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 15:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=30447

In this article for NewscastStudio, the role of LiveU’s ecosystem in transforming live IP video coverage during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is explored. LiveU’s technology, synonymous with election reporting since its inception in 2006, reached new heights during this event, with over 4,000 field units deployed—the largest fleet ever for a single event and nearly double the usage during the 2020 election. These units facilitated comprehensive, on-the-ground coverage and real-time updates. An impressive 925 customers across 56 countries transmitted over 40 terabytes of data, amounting to nearly 40,000 hours of live content.

LiveU’s LU800 units played a crucial role, supporting both remote (REMI) and on-site productions. These devices enabled seamless live feed transmission from campaign events, reactions, and speeches to control rooms worldwide. In addition, the cloud-native LiveU Matrix platform proved vital by distributing 23,000 hours of live feeds and enabling broadcasters to share 7,500 individual feeds, nearly doubling 2020’s distribution figures. By fostering collaborative news pools, the platform expanded coverage from critical battleground states to campaign headquarters globally.

For the first time during a major event, LiveU Ingest was widely deployed, enabling broadcasters to automatically record live feeds with story metadata tagging integrated into their Media Asset Management (MAM) systems. This innovation facilitated faster field processing and content sharing among stations, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Over 6,500 recordings and more than 4,000 hours of content were processed during Election Day. Additionally, LiveU’s Mobile Data service and its Reliable Transport (LRT™) protocol provided robust connectivity at key campaign sites, enhancing performance and resiliency.

The article highlights LiveU’s extensive support efforts, including a dedicated Election Day taskforce and round-the-clock assistance. Engineers were stationed at candidate headquarters, providing technical support and additional equipment as needed. LiveU also offered its Private 5G Connectivity option during earlier election cycle events, such as the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, with plans to extend this service to the inauguration.

Brian Tully, LiveU’s Senior VP of Sales, emphasized the unprecedented scale of election coverage enabled by their ecosystem, citing the seamless flow of video traffic and the reliability of their support teams. The election coverage demonstrated the transformative power of LiveU’s technology in delivering high-quality, collaborative live content on a global scale.

A Hole In One: LiveU And Disc Golf Remote Production Case Study https://news.broadfield.com/a-hole-in-one-liveu-and-disc-golf-remote-production-case-study/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=28246 The blog post “A Hole In One: LiveU And Disc Golf Remote Production Case Study” from 4rfv details the innovative use of LiveU technology to enable remote production of Disc Golf events across Europe. Disc Golf, a flying disc sport similar to golf, has gained popularity, particularly in the US and Europe. The European Open, held in Nokia, Finland, posed unique challenges due to its course locations in sparsely populated areas, often with challenging terrain.

To overcome these challenges and provide dynamic coverage, Pulsea Disc Golf Media utilized the LiveU IP-video EcoSystem, integrating it seamlessly with the existing infrastructure. This allowed for the expansion of production capacity to 12 cameras for the complete European Tour, enhancing the viewing experience for fans.

The remote productions were directed from Rockway Oy’s studios in Helsinki, leveraging LiveU multi-camera LU800s and related servers. The lightweight LiveU units enabled camera operators to move freely around the courses, capturing detailed footage. The feeds were sent wirelessly to the studio, even from challenging locations, using SIM cards from local mobile phone operators.

The fully produced HD streams were then distributed to the Disc Golf Network, allowing viewers to watch the live video via its website or app. Tests were conducted to assess the feasibility of 4K streaming, with positive results. The broadcast utilized a variety of cameras, including Sony FX6, FX30, and A7 cameras, as well as a DJI RS3 gimbal and a Mavic Pro 3 drone.

This remote production workflow not only enabled cost savings compared to traditional on-site production but also contributed to sustainability efforts by reducing travel and resource consumption. Overall, LiveU technology played a crucial role in making Disc Golf events accessible to viewers in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

Edmonton Oilers Engage Their Content-Hungry Fans https://news.broadfield.com/edmonton-oilers-engage-their-content-hungry-fans/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 15:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=27820 The blog post from LiveU details the evolution of the Edmonton Oilers’ digital media strategy under the stewardship of Ryan Hyrcun, the Manager of Video Production. Initially, the team focused on engaging their fanbase through social media channels, providing exclusive content and updates. This approach laid the groundwork for the launch of Oilers+, a streaming platform designed to offer fans even more immersive experiences, including behind-the-scenes access, live shows, pre/post-game coverage, and press conferences. Recognizing the potential for growth and revenue generation, the Oilers sought to enhance their live content delivery solution, eventually opting for LiveU over their previous transport solution, based on its user-friendly interface and enhanced functionality.

Following the adoption of LiveU technology, the Oilers witnessed a significant uptick in both subscriber numbers and revenue. With a subscription model spanning 12 months, the Oilers+ OTT platform saw its subscriber base grow from 10,000 to over 20,000 within the span of a year, resulting in revenue exceeding $1 million. This surge in subscriptions directly correlated with the team’s increased production of live content for the platform.

However, the Oilers faced new challenges as they sought to expand their live coverage, particularly for special events such as the NHL Heritage Classic. Held in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, this outdoor game presented logistical hurdles, as the team desired full coverage independence from the venue’s connectivity limitations. In response, the Oilers implemented a Remote Production workflow, with LiveU technology at its core. By deploying an LU800 field unit and LU300S field encoder, the team was able to capture live content from various locations throughout the stadium and transmit it back to their production control room at Roger’s Place in Edmonton. This innovative solution enabled the Oilers to deliver seamless, high-quality coverage of special events and enhance fan engagement through immersive, behind-the-scenes content.

When Fan Engagement is Literally Everything https://news.broadfield.com/when-fan-engagement-is-literally-everything/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 20:00:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=26774 The Savannah Bananas, a growing franchise, faced the challenge of expanding their reach, increasing fan engagement, and boosting revenue through ticket and merchandise sales. They aimed to introduce viewers to the sport and entertainment elements to generate brand loyalty and a dedicated fan following. Traditional live production methods were deemed cost-prohibitive.

The solution involved the implementation of LiveU’s EcoSystem and Remote Production Solution. LiveU’s IP bonded cellular encoders were used for connectivity, while a REMI production workflow allowed the production team to create a multi-camera live-streamed broadcast with the same gear and crew as their home base in Savannah, Georgia. This solution eliminated concerns about connectivity in different stadiums and venues.

As a result, thousands of viewers tuned in every night, and the quality of the broadcasts attracted the attention of broadcasters like ESPN and NESN. This innovative approach not only saved costs but also enhanced fan engagement, resulting in increased revenue streams from ticket and merchandise sales.

The workflow involved the LU800 production-level field unit connecting to multiple camera sources positioned throughout the stadiums, including cameras in the press box, high home, and center field. Lightweight LU300S encoders were deployed to on-field cameras, transmitting live feeds back to LiveU receivers in the Bananas control room. The show was then switched live and distributed as part of the live broadcast on YouTube.

In the words of Chad Reese, Coordinating Producer of the Savannah Bananas, the entire LiveU EcoSystem simplified the production process, enabling them to deliver high-quality broadcasts and quickly move on to the next one.
