Purdue UniversityConsistently ranked in the top ten programs by U.S. News and World Report, and recently gaining the #5 spot, Purdue University’s prestigious online master’s in engineering program provides working professionals the flexibility they need to complete their studies.

Striving to give its distance students a genuine on-campus experience, the school captures every engineering lecture held in its classrooms, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These are then delivered as digital lectures via video on demand. Distance students are able to watch a live stream of a lecture in real time, or download a high- or low-resolution video within 20 minutes after the class ends, thanks in big part to the Matrox® Monarch encoders.

Researching Encoder Options

Carl Black, Purdue University’s multimedia production manager, was tasked with researching hardware encoder options to live stream lectures in their new engineering distance learning facility. With a goal of finding an easy way to stream live video, and needing a scheduling mechanism, he hoped a standalone appliance would meet his requirements versus adding another computer and having to configure the hardware and software. This is when he came across the comprehensive Matrox Monarch HD H.264 hardware encoder—priced under $1000, it met all his criteria.

Close Examination

Distance students in the “digital campus” face the same challenging curriculum and exams as in-class students. Digital lectures, through exceptional streaming and recording, help replicate the vibrant in-class experience and assist them in learning.

To produce these digital lectures, each engineering classroom is equipped with two pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras that feed audio and video signals via SDI to a video switcher located in an operator room. A production engineer from the operator room produces the audio and six video sources—two PTZ cameras trained on the lecturer, one document camera, and two laptops and a computer with presentation material—to be sent for lecture capture. The resulting output from the switcher serves as the input for the Monarch HD encoder. Every lecture being unique, it is captured and streamed at different resolutions and bitrates, to suit the varying needs of the distance students.

Rigorous Testing and Assessment

Playing a pivotal role in Purdue University’s contemporary multimedia production setup, the Monarch HD sends a 1280 x 720, full frame rate, RTMP stream to a Wowza™ Media Server while simultaneously recording at a higher 1920 x 1080 resolution to a network mapped drive. As Monarch HD can record MP4 or MOV files to a locally attached SD card or USB drive, or to a network mapped drive, the recording bitrate is not tied to the streaming bandwidth limitation and can be set much higher. For instance, when streaming at 2 Mbps, the recording bitrate can be set way above, at up to 28 Mbps. Since the Monarch-encoded files don’t need transcoding, they are immediately ready to be transferred to the appropriate watch folder/server to provide higher-resolution digital lectures than the stream and archive…[continue reading]

The Matrox Monarch LCS is an inexpensive dual-input lecture capture solution with two output channels that can be independently set for recording and/or streaming.

]]>
At $2,495, the Matrox Monarch LCS is an inexpensive dual-input lecture capture solution with two output channels that can be independently set for recording and/or streaming. You control the unit via a standard browser, and you can connect a monitor for setup or monitoring. There’s an application programming interface (API) for integration with learning management and similar programs. The unit is based upon the proven Monarch hardware and software, and it performed well in our tests, though rough edges in the software remain from previous reviews.

Hardware I/O

Physically, the unit is about 6″ front to back, 8.5″ wide, and 2 inches high, about the size of a 300-page hardback novel (Figure 1, below). As you can see in Figure 1, the unit has two HDMI inputs, one for a camera and the other for computer input. If you’re working with an older computer that doesn’t have HDMI output, you can buy a VGA- or DVI-to-HDMI adapter for under $10. There’s also a single SDI input for video, and HDMI/SDI outputs to a preview monitor, which isn’t essential but I found very useful. The unit accepts up to 1080p output in either NTSC or PAL rates, but goes no higher, so if you’re looking for a 4K solution, this isn’t it…[continue reading]

Hammond Communications Selects Monarch HD H.264 Encoders for NCAA’s Webcasts

Monarch HD transforms production company’s workflow and increases quality and reliability of press conference webcasts & recordings

NCAA press conference webcast using Matrox Monarch HD H.264 streaming and recording appliance. Hammond Communications Group, a production company in Lexington, KY, US, carries out live, multi-camera productions of varying sizes and scopes, specifically press conferences for sporting events. Whether covering “the most exciting two minutes in sports” at the famed Kentucky Derby, or men’s and women’s basketball tournaments for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Big 10 and Southeastern Conference, Hammond is equipped to handle everything from lighting, audio and video production to distribution. To cover all the pre- and post- game press conferences (pressers) of the NCAA’s basketball tournaments—from first round to Final Fours—Hammond has eight two-camera flypack units that travel all over the country.

The aim

Hammond considered streaming as the best solution for its client to reach the greatest audience, given their scheduling commitments. Moreover, the NCAA wanted to start webcasting all of their March Madness 2016 tournament pressers as its audience predominantly viewed content over the Internet. For this, Hammond needed to incorporate the functionality across eight flypack units. Not satisfied with software-based solutions they used in the past, Hammond sought to implement a solution that was hardware-based—something that could be installed in a rack so that on-the-road engineers wouldn’t have to deal with setting up another piece of equipment. They also wanted to add recordings of the pressers, ideally straight to H.264, to have a manageable file size for FTP upload that could be easily accessed by off-site news stations, in lieu of a satellite down-link, and by on-site media.

Slam dunk

Lee Clements, video engineer at Hammond Communications, says “When looking for streaming hardware solutions, the Monarch HD™ appliance popped up. After a demo and further research, I realized there was no other product that offered the same amount of features in such a small package. Fitting flush in a 1RU rack, this professional video appliance performs H.264 encoding on a wide selection of HDMI feeds for simultaneous streaming and broadcast-quality recording, at high bit rates and resolutions, supporting popular protocols and file formats.”

Matrox Monarch HD H.264 encoding appliance, an integral part of Hammond Communication’s flypack.

Set up and fluid action

Hammond’s flypacks are equipped to sustain a full press conference setup. The control centers are either double-wide or two single-wide 24RU racks, with everything needed for production inside, and a smaller rack for audio mixer. Each system has cable trunks, 42″ LCD/LED televisions, PAR can lights, custom 16-output HD mult boxes and Sony cameras. The most constant addition is fiber, which changes from venue to venue, anywhere from 250 to 2,000 feet of single-mode tactical fiber. Since Hammond deals with broadcast-level productions and all signals are HD-SDI, an SDI-HDMI converter feeds HDMI signals to Monarch HD. (In the future, Hammond will consider the Monarch HDX as it supports SDI sources.)

The NCAA, Hammond’s biggest streaming client, has its own YouTube channels. As it was important to have consistency among all of its kits, Hammond set up a customized profile (5 Mbps, RTMP protocol, 720p stream), based on YouTube’s recommendations, and loaded the profile in every Monarch HD. So, on arrival at the event venue, all they need to do is push a button for the Monarch HD to start streaming and recording at the exact preselected quality. Needing only 5 Mbps for the stream, Hammond could set a considerably higher target bit rate for recording at 10 Mbps, in full input resolution of 1080i60, which helped the quality immensely. The Monarch HD produces very manageable sizes of recorded files that are saved to a 32GB SD card. When recording without streaming, the on-device button is handy for the video engineer to start and stop the recording from his seat, whereas the browser control is more convenient when streaming, since the user is already on the laptop to start/stop the event on YouTube. Winning results

Previous switcher-streaming as well as software solutions required external devices to convert video, but they still used up almost all of the computer’s processing power to encode, preventing the computer being used for any other task during the streaming. Monarch HD takes the processing away from the computer, and because it has a simple browser control, anyone can plug into the network switch and have access, making the physical configuration considerably more flexible. In the past, recording for FTP upload was done with a consumer-grade capture device not designed for any kind of professional recording. By moving to Monarch HD, Hammond not only increased the available capture bit rate, but also drastically changed the reliability. Clements remarked, “The Matrox Monarch HD appliance is a reliable solution for streaming and recording, in a compact package. It gives Hammond the edge in bringing our broadcast-level productions to an increasingly online viewership.”

“Monarch products fit seamlessly into places of worship allowing them to capture video of a service from a camera and/or the lesson presentation from a computer, and easily webcast them to their congregants,” said Dan Maloney, technical marketing manager, Matrox. “The intuitive products will mean faster turnarounds and allow sermons and prayer materials to reach audiences quicker, including those in on-site overflow rooms or at-home viewers with limited mobility. For those viewing at home, an experience comparable to being there in person will now be available on demand.”

Matrox Monarch LCS — Video Content Capture Appliance Matrox_Monarch_LCS_NAB16_awards

Competitively priced at $2,495 US, the Monarch LCS is an all-in-one device with HD streaming, recording, and production capabilities. Matrox Monarch LCS is an easy-to-use content capture appliance that accepts video from any SDI or HDMI camera and presentation content from computers over HDMI. Inputs can be encoded independently and in sync for use with the latest multi-stream video players. Alternatively, the inputs can be combined in a variety of production layouts, including picture-in-picture and side-by-side, for use with standard video players. In recording applications, the encoders write H.264 files (MP4 or MOV) directly to network-mapped drives, eliminating the need for post-service file transfer.

Matrox Monarch HD — H.264 Encoder Matrox_MonarchHD_html

For simpler installations where only a camera feed of the room needs to be webcast, the Monarch HD encoder, priced at $995 US, enables master-quality recording of sermons and services for post-event editing. Matrox Monarch HD takes an HDMI input from a source such as a camera and generates an H.264-encoded stream compliant with IP protocols (RTSP or RTMP). While encoding the video at bitrates suitable for live streaming, it simultaneously records a high-quality H.264 file (MP4 or MOV) to an SD card, a USB drive, or a network-mapped drive.
