With five new monitors introduced at NAB 2018, SmallHD continues to expand its line of monitors with different solutions. The new wireless monitors with touchscreen give more freedom to directors.

SmallHD debuted at the NAB Show 2018 five new monitors which drastically expand the FOCUS monitor family, by adding OLED, SDI, and wireless into the mix. Here are the RX and TX models in more detail.

With five new monitors added to the SmallHD family, the company’s presence at NAB 2018 was the right moment to check the multiple choices available, not only the new FOCUS models, but the whole collection. Highlights of the show, though, the new 5-inch wireless monitor system, the FOCUS Bolt TX (transmitter) and FOCUS Bolt RX (receiver), are different, as they are built on FOCUS touchscreen monitor platforms, with built-in Teradek transmitter and receiver systems.

First, though, let’s look at the other solutions presented in Las Vegas. The FOCUS OLED HDMI is a 1920×1080 resolution, 5-inch OLED touchscreen with a Micro HDMI input. David Colantuoni explains how Avid is working to expand their Media Composer product line to serve a wider variety of users. They have had a lock on the high end feature and TV market for many years, but are now hoping to introduce new Editors to the platform with more lightly featured versions at lower costs, even including a free version to get aspiring Editors started.

At NAB in Las Vegas, BirdDog CEO Dan Miall discusses how their products can simplify live production by connecting any video source using NDI. Atomos has been working on making video production workflows for years now and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.  Their CEO Jeromy Young took center stage during NAB 2018 to announce the introduction of ProRes RAW support on some of their monitors.  Working closely with Apple to get this technology in their monitors, ProRes RAW can now be supported on the Shogun Inferno and Sumo monitors.  Seeing the excitement behind this announcement and knowing how well liked ProRes RAW has become in the industry I suspect the support integration for ProRes RAW will make it to other products on their already impressive line.

Western Digital just revealed its new lineup of G-Technology G-DRIVE and G-SPEED external solid state drives at NAB 2018 and, as you might expect, they’re built to handle ultra-high resolution video. In fact, WD claims these Thunderbolt 3 drives enable “real-time 4K and 8K workflows” for professionals who need serious speed, capacity, and reliability.

There are three new drives in all: the G-DRIVE Mobile Pro SSD, the G-DRIVE Pro SSD, and the G-SPEED Shuttle SSD.

G-Technology booth here at NAB 2018 tells us their new Pro SSD line consists of three different products. First of them is the redundant and serviceable, high capacity, transportable RAID SSD solution called G-SPEED Shuttle SSD. Second drive is the high endurance desktop SSD in a minimalistic aluminium case called G-DRIVE Pro SSD. Avid has reduced the cost of the subscription version of Media Composer (pictured right) to under US$20 (around £15) a month and revealed a slate of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. It has also launched a new nearline storage product.

The announcements were part of a wide-ranging series of new product releases revealed at Avid Connect, the company’s three-day customer event, held in Las Vegas just prior to NAB 2018.

The lower cost subscription version of Media Composer, which was previously priced at US$50 a month, provides the full feature set of the industry-standard editor, with up to 24 video tracks, 64 audio tracks, and unlimited bins.
