Production practices and technologies for in-studio work is constantly evolving and at a rapid rate. It sometimes might seem that daily there’s a new device or innovation coming in to the fold and staffers and crew members are at the foot of it learning new things. These advancement are meant to make their lives easier of course and most often do. NewTek has been developing next-level equipment for the live video industry for years and now with live streaming being the fastest way to get your show out to the masses, they’ve brought us all Network Device Interface (NDI).

NDI-compatible equipment is available from a wide array of manufacturers, although NewTek offers the most options. The company sells cameras, converters, live production systems (such as the TriCaster series), graphics packages, and other tools and accessories. Many other manufacturers including PTZOptics, Streambox, Panopto, Magewell, vMix, Panasonic, and Marshall all offer a range of NDI gear such as cameras and converters. Converters such as the NewTek Connect Spark ensure that even existing or older camera systems don’t have to be replaced in order to take advantage of NDI. Producers can convert HDMI, SDI, and even 4K UHD cameras at the camera and add them to the list of available sources on the network.

NDI is wireless transmission of video over IP. What this means is now NDI capable live production systems and cameras can communicate without a direct cable connection between them. Since NewTek has given NDI away for free for other companies to use and implement into their products, new NDI products are being developed and released all the time.

NDI-capable live production systems like NewTek’s TriCaster systems are perhaps the most prevalent. NewTek also made their first camera an NDI PTZ camera and an NDI converter called the Connect Spark can convert SDI or HDMI cameras to NDI allowing producers to be able to continue to use some of the equipment they’ve been currently using.

The most important aspect of NDI is that it is available to anyone with a royalty-free license. NewTek even maintains an SDK that’s compatible with mobile, Windows, Linux, and macOS. Software developers and hardware manufacturers can integrate NDI into their products at zero up-front or ongoing cost.

Working in media can be a difficult endeavor.  Whatever your aspirations are the education needed to accomplish these goals can be overwhelming.  Getting an early start on this is priceless and that’s what the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District on Long Island have set out to do.  At Mepham High School a classroom was redesigned into a television studio for the students to get their feet wet in broadcasting practices.  Using equipment like a NewTek TriCaster Mini the students at Mepham High School are learning next-level skills that will put them ahead of most students looking into a career in broadcasting.  With introductory and more advanced classes at all levels in the high school and even local internship opportunities, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District has made it easier for students to get a running start into TV/Film college curricula.

Our program is a four year major with students from across the district applying for admission during 8th grade. Broadcast Communications I for freshmen uses the history of broadcasting to teach basic production skills. Broadcast Communications II for sophomores is a broadcast journalism course which also gives students skills in operating our studio equipment. During junior year, Broadcast Communications III focuses on narrative storytelling with students recreating scenes from sitcoms and film noir in our studio before creating their own short works. The NewTek NDI® PTZ1 camera is ideal for remote multi-camera video production. Compatible with any NDI enabled production system or application, video, audio, control, tally, and power are connected to the production system using a single ethernet cable over a standard computer network. It simplifies the setup for any video production. The camera can be controlled directly from the NDI® production system or setup and positioned using the included NDI Studio Monitor application or the configuration web page on any Windows or Mac computer.

Easy Switch

“We chose NewTek TriCaster® because it is easy to use,” says the group. “It’s a flexible system that works well with many other devices, and also reduces the number of devices and peripherals we need to control all broadcasts.”

What’s more, they agree, “it makes the media more interesting and varied. This affects the students’ interest and achievement in a greatly improved way.”

So much improved, in fact, that they’re now equipped with two TriCaster 410 systems in two studios, with integration provided by Monsan Pipatponglert, engineering consultant at integrator Samart Comtech – and broadcasting them via satellite and digital terrestrial to remote sites.

Says Raymond Siew, a NewTek product expert and sales engineer, the school is broadcasting seven days a week, with programming in two parts – live broadcasts for the first half of the day, then a replay of the entire program for the second half.

The content of the live show, says Siew, is typically a lecturer, instructing students how to use various applications for specific tasks – “such as showing steps and tips to create a PowerPoint, and how to add animation to a slide, and things like that.”

The lecturer would be working on a desktop computer, with its display output via an HDMI cable to an SDI converter that connects into the TriCaster 410. “They will do everything they need to in their PC application, and everything on their screen is captured into the TriCaster.”

With the computer screen feeding into the TriCaster, the video operator can switch back and forth between sources – including the lecturer’s camera, additional video feeds, and even Skype calls with a remote site – while the lecturer proceeds to work with the presentation.

While PAT has a couple of staff members who operate the system during productions, says Siew, TriCaster allows them to preset many functions so they can do more elaborate effects without a great deal of expertise – a crucial requirement of the solution.

“We’re not concerned about how long it will take to train TriCaster beginners,” say the technical specialists. “We do not worry, because TriCaster is easy to use.”
