LaCie: Works with iPad https://news.broadfield.com/lacie-works-with-ipad/ Wed, 12 May 2021 15:10:59 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=18510 Many editors and post production video professionals have been moving towards integrating iPads and portable tablets to their workflows. It’s a supplementary device, but can be an extremely powerful tool. LaCie has introduced support in many portable storage solutions for iPad, to make this workflow even better.

Check out some highlights from this article from LaCie to learn more.

For Editing on Set

If you’re looking to edit photos or footage right there on set, this is is your use case. A SmallRig Mount enables you to attach the Rugged SSD or Rugged SSD Pro to certain camera rigs such as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K/6K, Sigma FP, and Z CAM. The mount attaches to the camera cage using two captive 1/4”-20 screws, securing both the SSD and its connected USB Type-C cable by ratcheting thumbscrew. The mount’s offset attachment on the top left corner of the cage helps avoid interference with an attached top handle, side handle, or other accessories. All of this means that your SSD will directly ingest files, not after the shoot, but as you shoot. Once you’ve got your images, plug the drive into your iPad and let the on-set editing begin.

For Docking at Your Desk

While the iPad isn’t designed to dock peripherals, there are two LaCie solutions that are built to do exactly that: the 1big Dock and the 2big Dock. These Thunderbolt™ 3 powerhouses supply you with all the docking essentials—USB 3.0 port, SD card reader, CF card reader, and the ability to connect a secondary monitor—and it’ll keep your iPad powered as you use it. What’s more, the 2big Dock comes equipped with hardware RAID 0/1 so that you can optimize for speed, capacity, or data redundancy and it offers up to 36TB of massive storage. That’s a whole lot of space and performance for editing 4K, 6K, and even 8K footage on your iPad.

When Mass Capacity is a Must

There’s something freeing (and necessary) about knowing you’ve got terabyte upon terabyte of mobile storage when you’re on the go—especially when traveling or going off grid. And nothing delivers that quite like the Rugged USB-C. For outdoor wanderers and city commuters alike, this portable hard drive combines all the essential features: a compact build that makes it easy to fit in your bag; up to 4TB of storage for keeping loads of high-res files and footage at your fingertips; respectable transfer speeds of up to 140MB/s; universal USB-C connectivity; and unrivaled durability (it’s drop, crush, and rain resistant, plus IP54 rated, which is suitable for most users). All of this is to say: when you’re hitting the road with your iPad and Rugged USB-C, constrained storage space is not an issue.

G-Technology: On Set Professional’s Guide to Picking the Right Hard Drive https://news.broadfield.com/g-technology-on-set-professionals-guide-to-picking-the-right-hard-drive/ Tue, 27 Apr 2021 14:16:31 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=18314 G-Technology has recently released a great guide to which of their drives fits best in which workflow. G-Technology makes everything from portable drives, to desktop solutions, all with different speeds and varying ruggedness. We’re taking a look at G-Technology’s guide to picking the right drive, below.

Picking the right storage device for a specific job can be a real pain, but it’s integral to designing an efficient workflow. We’re here to help you find the right solutions for your needs and break down some best practices that can help keep things on budget, more secure, and on pace.

G-Technology

3-2-1: The Gold Standard

The ‘Gold Standard’ for how you protect OCF and other important files is the 3-2-1 Rule: THREE copies, one that you work off of and two backup⁵ copies; saved on TWO different types of storage (i.e. HDD/SSD, Tape, Server, etc.); ONE copy stored in a different location in case of fires, accidents, etc. The key is to have a clear plan and protocol in place with your fellow production members on and off set. You also must confirm receipt and validation of copies before any are wiped and the media reused.

Tip: Designate someone to ‘manage’ the process, and make sure they communicate with everyone handling media prior to production starting. Make sure everyone is aligned.

Checksum Before You Wreck Some

If your workflow is not utilizing confidence-based checksums and MHLs (media hash lists), it’s not a professional workflow, full stop. As good as OS based file managers may be, they do not create a verifiable record that your OCF has transferred properly, and completely. These records are necessary when managing OCF, whether multi-million dollar or phone-based productions. There are several industry standard software options to facilitate checksum transfers, without overcomplicating it for you.

Find Your Balance of Read and Write Transfer

A common misconception in media workflows is the expectation of how fast your data transfers. Ultimately it is your Capture Media’s listed Read rate in MB/s, matched with an offload drive that has AT LEAST as fast a Write speed in MB/s, that determine whether you’re slowing down your workflow. Two things to be mindful of are; 1. Capture Media readers that slow you down 2. Your interface’s theoretical ‘speed limit’ or ‘cap’ on how fast data moves over it (usually listed in Gb/s). Interface plays a bigger role in multiple offloads.

Tip: Look closely at your read/write speeds, use speed tests, and simple addition and subtraction to make sure you’re not slowing yourself down.

G-Drive Mobile SSD

The Mobile SSD features IP67 water and dust resistance, and can withstand a 3 meter drop. It is also 1000IB crushproof, and provides durable storage for your data.

G-Drive Mobile Pro SSD

Mobile Pro SSD is equipped with Thunderbolt 3 technology. It is also durable and shock resistant. This drive fits perfectly in your multi-stream 8K workflow, and can store 8K footage at full frame rate. It can transfer up to a terabyte of media in seven minutes or less.

ArmorATD

This is a rugged, all terrain drive that is completely portable. This is made for filmmakers and producers on the road in difficult environments, and comes equipped with triple layer shock resistance, as well as a solid aluminum enclosure.

G-SPEED Shuttle with Thunderbolt 3

This desktop solution comes with up to 72 Terabytes of capacity, and transfer speeds up to 1000MB/s. G-Speed Shuttle is a thunderbolt 3 device that is perfect for demanding workflows.

G-Speed Shuttle SSD:

One of the most powerful SSD desktop storage solutions available today. This drive has transfer speeds up to 2800MB/s, Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, and it comes packed in a transportable design perfect for editing multi camera footage in real time.

G-SPEED Shuttle XL with Thunderbolt 3

Shuttle XL is a transportable 8-bay hardware RAID solution. It packs transfer speeds up to 2000MB/s with Thunderbolt 3 technology. This offers creators high speed capacity and powerful performance.

LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is Extremely Fast and Extremely Rugged https://news.broadfield.com/lacie-rugged-ssd-pro-is-extremely-fast-and-extremely-rugged/ Wed, 29 Jul 2020 14:23:12 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=16024 The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is a great storage solution for the content creator on the go. These drives feature USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 ports. The SSD Pro is extremely rugged against dust, water, drops and crush pressure.

Check out some highlights from this article from sea.pcmag.com below to learn more.

Most people don’t need, and won’t want to pay for, the extreme speed and durability of LaCie’s Rugged SSD Pro external solid-state drive. But if you’re a videographer, filmmaker, or other professional who works in the field—and if you have a Thunderbolt-3 equipped laptop, so you can take full advantage of the device’s performance—you may consider it a bargain even at the $419.99 list price for the 1TB version tested here, or $739.99 for the 2TB version. Our new Editors’ Choice among high-end, rugged external SSDs, the LaCie is housed in a silicone-wrapped, crush-resistant aluminum case that’s small and light enough to fit in a shirt pocket, rugged enough to meet the IP67 spec for dust and water resistance, and rated to survive a 3-meter (10-foot-plus) fall. It’s also designed to fit in an overnight express envelope and survive the trip, so you can ship it to the office or studio when data connections are slow or nonexistent.

Extremely Fast, Extremely Rugged

The Rugged SSD Pro’s speed and toughness are pretty much tied for being its most impressive feature. For the first, it marries a Seagate FireCuda NVMe SSD with a Thunderbolt 3 interface. LaCie rates the combination at 2,800MBps for both disk reads and writes, compared with the 2,800MBps for reads and 2,300MBps for writes claimed for the Samsung Portable SSD X5—another SSD that combines NVMe with Thunderbolt 3, and the only other drive we’ve tested to date with similar performance. The two were virtually tied in our tests, leaving everything else in the dust. Together, they effectively redefine what fast means for an external drive.

LaCie Rugged SSD Review: Tough, Secure, and Fast https://news.broadfield.com/lacie-rugged-ssd-review-tough-secure-and-fast/ Tue, 24 Mar 2020 16:34:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=15051 Tomshardware.com recently posted a great article reviewing the LaCie Rugged SSD. This portable, rugged drive is one of our favorite storage solutions available today for those on the go- so we’d like to break down some of the finer points of that article.

LaCie’s Rugged SSD is exactly what the name implies: a rugged SSD. Built for the filmmaker or professional on the go, the Rugged SSD provides enough performance to let you transfer and edit 4K video quickly over a USB-C 10 Gbps connection. And aside from being fast, it also features convenient password protection to keep your sensitive data secure on both Windows and Mac systems, too. The main downsides? It’s expensive and the included cables are short.

Moving around, backing up, and syncing a lot of media files, especially those RAW 4K videos you have taking up all your space, can be quite time-consuming. That’s what makes toying with (or testing) some of the latest 10 Gbps devices a pleasure and Thunderbolt 3 a dream — at least with the quality ones that is. Drag, drop,  your task is done in a matter of moments and the drive is ready for more. Unlike those archaic HDDs that seem to take forever if you’re dealing in gigabytes — let alone terabytes.

We recently reviewed the SanDisk Extreme Pro, a quality built, fast external drive that goes non-stop after hours of hammering it with data. It’s built using WD’s Black NVMe SSD and is a pretty sweet drive if you need that type of performance to keep up with your workflow.

But what if you want another option? Maybe one with a better encryption method that is hardware-based? Maybe you want something that’s even more rugged and ready for the road. Or maybe you’re just a die-hard LaCie fan with money to burn? Either way, we now have the LaCie Rugged SSD, and it’s out to compete. With a similar formula to that of the SanDisk Extreme Pro, LaCie takes Seagate’s high-end PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, the FireCuda 510, and packs it into the Rugged SSD’s fast and iconic Neil Poulton-designed enclosure.

LaCie Rugged SSD Pro Review: External Thunderbolt/USB Storage for the Adventurer https://news.broadfield.com/lacie-rugged-ssd-pro-review-external-thunderbolt-usb-storage-for-the-adventurer-2/ Fri, 28 Feb 2020 21:18:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14890 The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is a great portable solution for film makers on the go who need reliable and sturdy storage for their data. Macworld.com recently posted a great review of this drive, we’re going to take a look at some of the finer points of this article.

An IP67 rating means creators in the wild can utilize this super fast, high-end storage without the attending worries.

For many users, an IP67-rated ruggedized portable SSD will be a rather expensive piece of storage overkill. However, for the adventurous few, the peace of mind LaCie’s Rugged SSD Pro will bring when you’re out in the world might well be worth the extra expense.

blackmagic
The Rugged SSD Pro is almost as fast as many internal drives. NVMe over Thunderbolt 3 will do that for you.

The grippy, silicon covering of the Rugged SSD Pro makes it one of my favorite external drives. That it’s very fast and can be used via Thunderbolt 3 or USB doesn’t hurt, either.

Design and specs

The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is available in 1TB ($400) and 2TB ($700) capacities, the same prices as Samsung’s X5. We tested the less capacious unit. The drive measures 3.85-inches by 2.55-inches, and around 0.7-inches thick. Inside is a Seagate (LaCie’s parent company) FireCuda 510, four-lane, PCIe/NVMe SSD.

The single Type-C port is located on one of the longer edges and supports both USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3. USB 3.x Gen2 10GBps would be nice, but the cross-platform compatibility is a boon. The competing Samsung X5 is Thunderbolt-only, which hampers is ability to use the drive on non-Mac computers. (You’l need to format in exFAT to access the drive on both platforms, or use compatibility drivers such as those available from Paragon Software.)

Hands on Review of the Amazing LaCie Rugged SSD Pro https://news.broadfield.com/hands-on-review-of-the-amazing-lacie-rugged-ssd-pro/ Fri, 31 Jan 2020 14:56:36 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14717

The new LaCie Rugged SSD Pro is the most impressive portable SSD unit LaCie has in its line with an official rated speed of up to 2800MB/s using a Thunderbolt 3 connection (that is almost 3 times the speed of the LaCie Rugged SSD that we tested, which until now was the fastest drive we have ever reviewed here on the site).

A few weeks ago we published what was apparently the first-ever video review of the new LaCie Rugged SSD NVME version. In the meantime we also received the LaCie Rugged BOSS SSD (review coming soon), however, this review is all about the Rugged Pro version.

Both drives use NVME technology to produce ultra-fast transfer speeds, however, the Pro version also uses Thunderbolt 3 technology which is significantly faster than UBS-C 3.1 used in the non-Pro drive (this also means that you will need a TB3 to actually get the speed benefits of this drive and keep in mind that TB3, despite being a very capable technology, still has issues with many systems.

LaCie Rugged 1TB NVMe SSD Review https://news.broadfield.com/lacie-rugged-1tb-nvme-ssd-review/ Fri, 03 Jan 2020 16:18:40 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14594 TweakTown.com recently posted a great article about the LaCie Rugged SSD. Incidentally, this is one of our favorite drives right now. Check out some highlights from the article below, to learn more about the LaCie Rugged SSD.

LaCie introduces the smallest Rugged portable SSD to date, featuring a 1TB NVMe SSD and some nice features.

With the portable SSD market heating up, LaCie has decided to launch a few solutions they noted earlier in the year. The Rugged SSD takes from its iconic lineup and offers a miniature sized portable SSD fit with the latest technology.

One look, and you instantly know the Rugged SSD is a LaCie solution. Working off the iconic Neil Poulton design, the latest offers a much smaller form factor for those wanting the best in portability with this pocket-sized drive without sacrificing performance or durability. To further this, the Rugged SSD is a sealed solution garnering an IP67 rating for dust and water intrusion.

Capacity options for this solution range from 500GB through 1TB with 2TB at the high-end. Connectivity is offered via USB-C 10GB/s and is backward compatible with both USB 3.0 with an adapter and Thunderbolt 3. Performance is rated at 1000 MB/s.

MSRP of the LaCie Rugged SSD in the 1TB capacity comes in at $319.99, while the 500GB model is offered for $189.99 and the 2TB for $529.99. All three have a five-year warranty.

LaCie Rugged SSD NVME Review https://news.broadfield.com/nov-11-0-lacie-rugged-ssd-nvme-review/ Wed, 18 Dec 2019 16:45:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14524

A few weeks ago Lacie introduced a number of new portable storage solutions including the Rugged SSD, the Rugged SSD Pro, and Rugged BOSS SSD Drives. This review will focus on the Rugged SSD and hopefully, we can get to the two other units on future videos.

Both the Rugged SSD and the Rugged SSD Pro use NVME technology to produce ultra-fast transfer speeds. The Rugged SSD is officially rated at 950MB/s which is almost twice the speed of our current fastest portable SSD that we tested here earlier this year – the LaCie Portable SSD. The Lacie Rugged SSD Pro is even more impressive with an official rated speed of up to 2800MB/s using a Thunderbolt 3 connection (the non-pro version uses USB 3.1 Gen 2 which goes up to 10Gb/s, but not Thunderbolt 3 which maxes at a theoretical limit of 40Gb/s).

So let’s take a closer look at the design and build of the Rugged SSD.

Build

The Rugged SSD NVME is very similar to the design of the original rugged series of drives by LaCie with the orange color and rubber cover but there are a number of key differences. The most obvious one is the size. This drive is small, about 10cm (4″) by 6cm (just over 2″), much smaller than the mechanical rugged drives and even smaller than the Lacie Portable SSD that we have tested.Unlike some of the older rugged drives, this one has no connected cable and instead it comes with two very short cables in the box – a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-A cable. We are guessing that these short cables are mainly for laptops but if you are using a desktop-like we do – it is really uncomfortable and you will need to find a longer cable.

Another small difference is the location of the USB-C connector on the drive which is on the long side rather than the shorter side like in other LACIE drives, we are not sure what made the company change that and it is a bit strange aesthetically, although functionally it doesn’t really matter that much.

The unit has an IP67 rating for extreme dust and water resistance, 3m drop and two-ton car crush resistance (at least on paper, we didn’t perform any crush tests), as well as Seagate Secure self-encrypting technology for project confidentiality and 5 year limited warranty plus a Rescue Data Recovery Services plan, which is actually really nice.

Lacie Rugged SSD – IP67 rating

Performance

Performance is where this drive really shines. We performed two types of tests: a synthetic test using the Crystal Disk Mark 6 software and a real-world test where we transferred about 5GB of video files to the drive and back from our test computer that has a build-in ultra-fast Samsung 970 NVME drive.

The Crystal Disk Mark scores are very impressive, actually, the best that we have seen on any drive that we tested so far with 912MB/s read and over 965MB/s write (interesting to see a faster write compared to read, this is typically the other way around).

Our real-world test results were not as high but still very impressive with over 612MB/s from the computer to the drive and about 816MB/s from the drive to the computer, both using a USB-C to USB-C cable. Interestingly, results using a USB-C to USB-A cable were pretty much similar (note that we have USB 3.1 Gen 2 on our motherboard so your mileage may vary).

Conclusion

The Lacie Rugged SSD NVME holds up to its promise – it shows very impressive performance both in synthetic benchmarks, but more importantly in real-world transfer tests. It is small, compact and rugged and has no obvious drawbacks when it comes to its operation, maybe aside from the short cables it comes with.

Outstanding performance Lacie Rugged SSD (NVME version)

The only thing that you need to consider here is its price. Selling for $300 for the 1TB version (there are also 2TB and 500GB versions of this drive) it is over $100 more expensive than the LaCie Portable SSD which might not be as fast but is still a fantastic performer. On the other side of the performance and cost range you have the Rugged SSD NVME Pro version which cost $100 more for the same capacity (update: there are some interesting deals on it at B&H now), but at least on paper provide over 2.5 times the performance (something that we are hoping to test here soon as well), so you should decide for yourself which drive fits your needs and budget.
