Secure Data – SecureDrive BT https://news.broadfield.com/secure-data-securedrive-bt/ Fri, 24 Sep 2021 18:20:08 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=19671 SecureData’s SecureDrive BT is an excellent solution for those who want to keep their data safe, but still have it be easily accessible when it is in the right hands. Recently, appletechtalk.com posted a great review of this drive, and all the advantages it brings to the table.

Check out some highlights from this article, below.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a major shift in work habits and every day, another company announces that the majority of its employees will work remotely. That means more than ever before, sensitive data is leaving the confines of the corporate network. That also means we should be doing everything we can to keep sensitive data safe. Even individuals want a way to store important and sensitive data safely.

If protecting data is something you are interested in, check out the Secure Data SecureDrive BT.

Secure Data SecureDrive BT – Unboxing

The Secure Data – SecureDrive BT is a hardware encrypted hard drive that uses Bluetooth® connectivity from your iPhone or iPad to unlock the drive and make it usable.

If you look on line, you nay see that the Secure Data – SecureDrive BT is packed in a clear plastic case and includes the drive, a USB 3.0 cable and a Quick Start Guide. They also offer several options including protective case and a USB-C cable.

Our Secure Data – SecureDrive BT came in a cardboard box and included the drive, the USB 3.0 cable and the Quick Start Guide, but also included the case and the USB-C cable. In checking with the folks at Secure Data, we learned that while they still offer those items as options,  they have upgraded the packaging to include the USB-C cable and case going forward. Their web site is currently being updated to reflect these changes.

While the included carrying case was a nice surprise, we especially appreciate that Secure Data recognized that USB-C is becoming more widely used (especially for Mac users), and decided to include the USB-C cable along with the USB 3.0 cable and we hope other companies start to follow their lead.

SecureData has Gamers Covered https://news.broadfield.com/securedata-has-gamers-covered/ Sat, 17 Apr 2021 17:42:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=18275 SecureData’s recent article written by Robert Liles shares how gamers need security to protect their data from cybercriminals. Video games aren’t like the were in the 70’s. Coin operated machine quickly switched to home consoles that are now one of the worlds most popular forms of entertainment.

Direct-downloads are popular ways for gamers to acess their games. This means storing credit card information and other personal data online. This opens up a new place for cybercriminals to steal data.

“While purchasing base games on a disc is still normal, direct downloads of games or additional content to enhance the base game are common. This also means attaching credit card and other personal information linked to an account to these purchases. While consoles are not quite as susceptible to attacks as computers, it could be a matter of time before they’re more targeted, and thieves can and do compromise gamers’ information. In many cases, the providers’ servers are compromised, which can expose a gamer’s personal information.

Currently, the user’s account information is the prime target for cybercriminals, yet through an online account consoles can be vulnerable. While gamers work hard for their achievements, or even make additional purchases, cybercriminals can steal these and sell them on gaming websites. Associated payment information may also be linked to the game data, which could then be stolen.”

Robert Liles

SecureData gives gamers a solution to the problem. Their line of storage devices work great on XBox and PlayStation. In Particular the SecureDrive KP is a key choice for gamers. The SecureDrive KP Hardware Encrypted External Portable HDD protects your senestive files. Packing AES 256-bit XTS hardware encryption, this portable drive locks down your sensitive files while eliminating the loss in data read/write speeds common with software-based data encryption. The KP also sports a special keypad for entering your own PIN, and it’s covered with a wear-resistant coating so attackers can’t guess your most commonly used keys.

SecureData SecureUSB BT Review https://news.broadfield.com/securedata-secureusb-bt-review/ Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:52 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=17958 SecureData’s line of secure encrypted drives mean true protection of your data, and unprecedented control over when and where it can be shared. The SecureUSB BT is a blue tooth USB thumb drive from SecureData, perfect for holding sensitive information. It can also be controlled entirely from your smart phone.

RichardTech creates great video editorials on some of the latest and most exciting technology ranging from video and streaming, to storage, to the latest smart phone devices. Recently, they covered the SecureUSB BT in great detail. Check out the video, below.

Check out this video from RichardTech to learn more.

Richardtech.net recently created a great article on the SecureData SecureUSB BT, getting into some of the features of the device.

Check out some highlights from that article, below.

The design of the SecureUSB BT is not too dissimilar to a standard flash drive, it has a protective metal sleeve that protects the drive when not in use and slides over a rubber seal at the base of the drive, providing an IP57 dust and water-resistance rating. The sleeve provides a good seal, but it can be quite difficult to remove from the flash drive at times as it is such a strong seal around the base of the device. With the sleeve off, the flash drive itself is fairly plain – aside from some branding and device info printed on the underside.

SecureUSB BT and outer case
A metal sleeve protects the flash drive when it is not in use.

The drive itself is constructed from plastic and features a hole at the end which can be used to tie to a lanyard or the included wristband. The plastic has a soft-touch finish that feels pleasant to hold and is in a blue colour which corresponds with the SecureData brand colours. The top of the flash drive has an indicator LED which can tell you information about the encryption status of the USB and if there is data being transferred to or from the drive.

Features

If you’re looking at a flash drive in this category, the XTS-AES 256-bit hardware-level encryption is going to be the main appealing feature. This does come at a premium in comparison to a typical USB flash drive, with the SecureUSB BT starting at £70 for an 8GB drive, but you are really paying for the hardware encryption features.

As the drive uses hardware encryption, it does not require any software to be run or installed on your computer, or any computer, you choose to use the drive with – the decryption process is done from the SecureData Lock app on your device. This provides some added flexibility as the flash drive will work with any computer or device that supports USB storage as it detects it as a regular drive once it has been unlocked from the app. The app can be installed onto an Android or iOS device and connects to the flash drive over Bluetooth to authenticate.

SecureUSB BT and app
The SecureData Lock app is used to unlock the flash drive and customise settings.

The app is straightforward to use and allows you to unlock the flash drive using a 7–15-digit password. I’ve been testing out the app on iOS, but I imagine the functionality will be similar on Android. The app allows me to customise a collection of settings regarding the flash drive such as 2-factor authentication, password recovery and the choice to unlock the flash drive with FaceID or my Apple Watch.

Additionally, within the app, some further security options can be used to harden the flash drive further such as setting the drive to auto-lock after a specified inactivity time or even if you walk away from the drive whilst it is connected to a computer. I found the proximity auto-lock to work effectively, although it would be nice to have the option to fine-tune this setting as it can only be turned on or off.

An interesting feature I found within the app was the remote wipe setting, when enabled, this setting allows you to remotely set the flash drive to immediately wipe itself when it is connected to a mobile device – this sounds like quite a handy feature if you have personal documents or sensitive information stored on the USB.

I really like how the app allows you to easily customize the features you wish to use with the flash drive, and it is straightforward to get set up and running and the app is quick and snappy to use which is great.

SecureDrive BT 1TB SSD Review – Safety In Numbers https://news.broadfield.com/securedrive-bt-1tb-ssd-review-safety-in-numbers/ Tue, 10 Dec 2019 21:32:00 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14467

What are the most essential qualities you look for in an external storage drive? The answer to that question will dictate whether or not the SecureDrive BT is for you. If you favour security and protection of your sensitive files over everything else, then there is absolutely no doubt that you should buy this drive yesterday. If you’re only looking to store a few photographs and don’t need the additional security protocols, this is a slightly harder sell. It’s rare that a product knows its audience so well and is willing to cater to them almost exclusively.

Let’s back up a little. SecureDrive is a storage and security-focused product created by Los Angeles-based data security company SECUREDATA. Along with SecureUSB, SecureDrive comprises one half of SECUREDATA’s flagship high-security storage device range. Rather impressively, the SecureDrive BT’s size begins at 1TB and only gets bigger, with the largest capacity device offering a staggering 8TB of storage. Make no mistake: these are not products for the casual consumer. Rather, these are industry-grade drives designed to appeal to those with massive volumes of high-sensitivity data to store.

So, having established that the BT has a very specific audience in mind, one question becomes apparent: is this the right product for that audience? It’s very, very difficult to imagine why you wouldn’t want to grab one of these if you’re a security-conscious professional with a lot of data to store. Granted, it’s a highly specific niche, but if you do count yourself as part of that niche then there are few other options as appealing or convenient as the SecureDrive BT. Most people probably won’t need to venture above 1TB, so that’s the drive we’ve opted to review.

The first thing that’s striking about the SecureDrive BT is its form factor. Many drives of this caliber opt for a hefty, inconvenient build quality that detracts from their usefulness. Not so with the BT. This is a small, slim device that will fit neatly in your hand; it’s not much bigger than a smartphone with a reasonably-sized case. This means you can comfortably carry your BT in your pocket or in a backpack or suitcase. It’s impressive that SECUREDATA has packed so much functionality into a device so small, but that’s just one of the BT’s many talents.

If you’re a security nut, you’ll be pleased to know that despite packing such a slimline form, the SecureDrive BT offers FIPS 140-2 Level 3 protection for your files. This is a US government cryptography standard that has very stringent requirements; the drive must be able to detect and respond appropriately to signs of physical tampering or stress, as well as attempts to crack its software. Many drives of this nature only reach FIPS 140-2 Level 2. That’s more than enough for the average user, but as we’ve established, the SecureDrive BT isn’t aiming for the average user.

That FIPS protection is matched by AES 256-bit XTS military-grade encryption. It’s clear that SECUREDATA has gone the whole nine yards when it comes to securing your files; this kind of protection often isn’t found on drives this small or with this much storage. To put it simply, if you’re not a software buff or you’re not particularly au fait with computers, the BT is probably the most secure solution on the market right now for storing and encrypting your files. It’s very hard to imagine a hacker managing to gain access to this drive.

There’s an extra subscription service that you can add to the drive should you wish to. Remote Management allows you to, as you may have guessed, manage the files on your SecureDrive BT remotely. From anywhere in the world, you can enable time fencing and geofencing, perform a password reset, and view and change the files on your drive (provided you supply the correct key, of course). This is great news if you’re a manager who wants to send their staff away with the drive but doesn’t want to grant access to the staff member carrying it. It’s an extra expense, but it’s worth it.

Perhaps the BT’s star feature is this: you can remotely wipe the drive if you suspect it’s been tampered with. This doesn’t require a Remote Management subscription and you can do it from anywhere in the world. SECUREDATA’s watchword here is safety; the company clearly wants you to feel like your files are safe, no matter what might happen to them or how they might end up being mishandled. Whether you’re a government security professional or an IT manager for a large company, this is the drive for you if you’ve got files to protect.

That’s not to say the drive is beyond you if you’re not a big IT person. The SecureDrive BT can be used with any operating system and is compatible with both mobile devices and desktop software. No matter what your computer is running, you’ll be able to take advantage of the BT’s features. It’s also extremely user-friendly; there aren’t any complex software programs to learn and there’s no complicated coding to deal with. It’s just you, your files, and a drive that’s dedicated to keeping them safe no matter what happens.

In the end, it’s not hard to recommend the SecureDrive BT. As we said earlier, you’ll have to be the right kind of customer to appreciate everything it can do; the price tag might be a little high for you if you’re just looking to take your novel with you to the coffee shop. This is a heavy-duty product intended for heavy-duty users, and if you’re one of them, there’s no better option on the market. The SecureDrive BT’s slim form factor, incredible security protocols, and convenient remote wiping mechanism make it an easy sell if your priority is safety.

Review – SecureDrive BT portable SSD (1TB) https://news.broadfield.com/review-securedrive-bt-portable-ssd-1tb/ Wed, 13 Nov 2019 17:54:39 +0000 https://news.broadfield.com/?p=14285 When we first knew about SecureDrive, we went on to their website to check out what they have in their catalog of products. We found out that they specialize in manufacturing encrypted external storage devices with high-grade security – and is also a part of SecureData. We then got the SecureDrive BT portable SSD on our hands because it is honestly, a unique product.

The SecureDrive is available in both BT (the one we have) and KP (keycap) variants. In this review, we are focusing on the SecureDrive BT only.

Unboxing

We were sent the SecureDrive BT with 1TB in capacity. The packaging itself is rather special as it has a bunch of useful information on the plastic shell.

SecureDrive BT

At the back of the packaging shell, there are mentions of the key highlight points about the SecureDrive BT. Interestingly, they are using hardware-based AES 256-bit XTS hardware encryption. It also comes with a 2-year warranty!

SecureDrive BT

Opening up the shell – which has tabs instead of tape – reveals just 3 things – the SecureDrive BT itself, a really simple quick start guide, and also a USB 3.0 Type-A to USB 3.0 Micro-B.

The SecureDrive BT itself

SecureDrive BT

This drive has a pretty simple design overall. It comes in this blue aluminium case and has the company name SecureDrive printed at the front. There are black pieces at the bottom and top, with some indicator LEDs at the latter.

SecureDrive BT

The micro USB 3.0 cable plugs in at the top and it is rather disappointing as I was hoping it would be using USB-C instead. Its pairing code is above the USB port too. This pairing code is unique for all drives and is used to pair with the DataLock app – which we will talk about later.

SecureDrive BT

At the back of the drive is the serial number. Remember to keep the serial code somewhere safe as it is necessary for certain features in the DataLock app.

Looking around the drive itself, there are no obvious ways to pry open the drive to get the SSD out, bypassing the hardware security. Even if the drive does get pried apart, the data inside the SSD is already encrypted with AES 256-bit XTS. So, you can’t read the data willy nilly.

The DataLock companion app

To use the SecureDrive BT, you’ll need 3 things:

  • A smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • Internet connection
  • Bluetooth

Download and install the SecureDrive BT app onto your smartphone – it’s free for both iOS and Android. Opening the app will prompt you to add your drive into the app itself. It’s a very straightforward process, honestly.

Once you downloaded the app, it will ask you to pair up the drive with your SecureDrive BT. This is where the pairing code comes in – just enter the code when prompted and you will have the drive added to your app.

After that, the app will ask you to set a password for the drive. Type in any password you want and it will be saved. Then, it will also ask if you want to have password recovery in case you forgot your password. This will require your phone number, and it will send in an activation code via SMS.

SecureDrive BT DataLock app

Once that’s done, the drive will unlock itself and you’ll be able to use the drive on any devices you like – Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Chrome OS, or even Citrix. I personally recommend you to format the drive in exFAT file system for maximum compatibility across all operating systems.

SecureDrive BT
Since the encryption is done on the drive itself, the SecureDrive can be used on any operating systems.

From here, you can use the drive as is – or head back to the DataLock app and further customize your SecureDrive BT. I personally have these settings for my SecureDrive BT.

SecureDrive BT DataLock app

Here’s a quick rundown of some features found in the DataLock app:

  • Password/Access
    • Change name: Renames the drive name that appears in the DataLock app, independent from the name detected in the operating system.
    • 2-factor authentication: Requires an activation code (sent via SMS) to unlock after keying in the correct password.
    • Password recovery: To recover your password if forgotten, need to be tied in to your phone number first.
    • Remember password: Self-explanatory. Not recommended.
    • Biometric unlock: Instead of a password, it can be unlocked via face or fingerprint. Applicable for both iOS and Android.
  • Locking options
    • Inactivity auto-lock: If the SecureDrive BT is left idle for a set amount of time, it will automatically lock itself
    • Step-away auto-lock: Using your smartphone a “proximity sensor” via Bluetooth, the drive will automatically lock itself if it gets too far away from your phone.
    • Read-only: Sets the SecureDrive BT to read-only mode. Perfect if you are copying files into a public PC.

There is also an option to remotely wipe the SecureDrive BT if you lose it. However, you’ll need to enable this option to arm the drive first. Then, in case the drive is lost, you can trigger the remote wipe to happen the next time this particular SecureDrive BT connects to the DataLock app.

SecureDrive BT DataLock app

It is here that the serial number of your SecureDrive BT is important. The serial number found in two places – on the SecureDrive BT itself, and also at the dashboard of the DataLock app.

Though, I wouldn’t be concerned since the drive automatically wipes itself after 10 failed unlocking attempts. This feature cannot be disabled or changed, and it essentially makes the remote wipe feature to be instantaneous.

Speedy external SSD

Alas, the SecureDrive BT is still an external SSD in essence. From what we can find out, the SecureDrive BT is equipped with an off-the-shelf consumer-grade, 2.5-inch SATA III-based QLC SSD. The one we have is a 1TB Samsung 860 QVO SSD.

By looking at the drive model, it makes sense why the SecureDrive has this dimension. It is only slightly larger than a 2.5-inch storage drive, though opting for an M.2 SSD might result in a much smaller form factor.

We tested the performance of the SecureDrive BT (1TB) and the performance is somewhat okay. It is definitely not the speediest in the market, but it is much faster than a traditional spinning hard disk drive.

SecureDrive BT CrystalDiskMark benchmark
SecureDrive BT CrystalDiskMark bencxhmark (2)

Wrapping up the SecureDrive BT review

This drive has really useful security features built-in into the hardware itself. The DataLock companion app accentuates those features by offering some customizability in terms of how you want to lock/unlock the drive. However, because of how the drives need to talk to the server every time you want to unlock the drive, you’ll need an internet connection on your phone.

However, there is room for improvement here. I hope the next generation of SecureDrive BT will be using USB-C. I also hope for a much smaller form factor – which is achievable by using an M.2 SSD instead.

SecureDrive BT

Overall, I think the SecureDrive BT is a very well-made product for its intended purpose. Both hardware and software complement each other, creating a fantastic user experience.
