SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 SSD Review

The ultra-rugged SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 offers versatile dual-mode compatibility with both Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 and is built to last with its high-level IP68 dust/water resistance, 3m drop protection, and 4000lb crush resistance. The PRO-G40 is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB and comes with a Type-C to Type-C cable, an ample warranty, and solid support.

Tom’s Hardware reviewed the PR-G40 and says “The best portable SSD we’ve tested to date.” For this review the PRO-G40 was tested in both the Thunderbolt and USB modes. All the testing results can be found in the review here!

After testing, the verdict was in. “The 1TB SanDisk Pro-G40 is the best portable SSD we’ve tested, getting strong marks in every performance category.,” Says Tom’s Hardware. “It’s fast and rugged. If you can take advantage of the Thunderbolt capability and overlook the price, it’s hard to beat.”

SanDisk Professional Pro-Dock 4 Review

Jaron Schneider of PetaPixel says the SanDisk Professional Pro-Dock 4 is the best card reader for professionals! In his review he compares the Pro-Dock 4 to the Lexar Pro Workflow Hub HR2 that he’s used for five years. Check out some highlights from his review.

The front of the Pro-Dock is just as impressive. In addition to the four modular bays that house the individual readers (more on that shortly), it also has two USB-A, 5 Gbps ports and 2 USB-C 10 Gbps ports as well as a headphone jack. SanDisk seems to have recognized that Pro-Dock isn’t small (it’s about the depth of two of those Lexar Hubs and significantly heavier), so it decided to make the most of needing that space by providing more options for connectivity. I’m totally on board with that.

The real magic of this type of system is the aforementioned modular port and reader system. The Lexar HR2 worked in a similar manner. Rather than a set card reader, this system allows for a plug-and-play solution that can be specifically tailored to a particular photographer’s workflow. If you don’t use SD cards, you don’t have to get the readers for those. If you do now but in two years have moved on to CFexpress, you don’t need to replace the whole unit, you only need to get the modular insert.

The modular inserts are a USB-C interface that lets you pull a reader out when you’re about to hit the road and use it as a travel card reader as well. SanDisk Professional makes four inserts, the “multi-card” reader (one microSD, a CF, and one UHS-II SD port), a CFexpress Type B reader, a CFast reader, and a RED Mini-Mag reader.

But given the dearth of options out there that do exactly what this does, I’m down to say it’s still the best option for heavy-duty, high-volume photo and video ingestion. Using the Pro-Dock 4 has been a dream and the fact that it goes above and beyond what Lexar once gave us is something I really appreciate. The amount of time this saves is a godsend.

He gave this powerful drive 4 stars out of 5 and had a lot to say! The G-DRIVE SSD is available in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB and has transfer speeds up to 560MB/s let you quickly save, edit and archive large source files, while a versatile USB-Cport with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface keeps this device ready for laptops both old and new. The G-Drive SSD has a very solid feel in the hand, as it should considering its high capacity 2,000-pound crush resistance and IP67 ratings. The rubber-like exterior also grips the surface you place it on. There is a white power/activity LED on the opposite side of the USB Type-C port, too.

The G-Drive SSD is not only good for a professional workflow, but it’s also good for play, too. The SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD delivered solid game load results having scored within roughly half a second of the fastest competitor and one and a half seconds faster than the LaCie Rugged SSD.

Unlike some poorly designed SSDs, the G-Drive SSD won’t slow down to HDD-like speeds when hammered. So, when it comes to moving around 4K footage and RAW photos or maybe just a bunch of your documents or games, the SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD will deliver a consistent, solid performance time and time again. It isn’t the fastest 10Gbps SSD you can buy, however, and it shares a hardware design very similar to that of much cheaper alternatives like the SanDisk Extreme v2 and WD MyPassport SSD.
