In this #MyAtomosRig video Philip Bloom walks us through the gear he uses to get creative results in his home studio setup. He utilises a variety of lenses and Sony cameras, combined with the Atomos Sumo19 and Shinobi SDI to achieve a professional look. Lighting and audio also play their part and Philip relies on the Rode NTG4 and NTG5 to get perfect sound. Lighting is provided by his patio doors and supplemented by a CAME TV RGB LED panel light.

Using the Sumo 19 allows him to both monitor with confidence and also record Apple ProRes from multiple cameras in HD or a single camera in 4K, The high quality files produced do not require any transcoding and are easy to edit.

That will make the Sumo 19 capable of recording isolated 1080p60 streams from up to four different camera sources while simultaneously recording a real-time switched program out to the same SSD in Apple ProRes or Avid DNx formats. The switched program can also be output on HDMI or HD-SDI. The cameras do not need to be synchronized via genlock.

The Sumo’s touchscreen can be used to switch between inputs. In one configuration, a single tap will make a hard cut to a new source while a double tap will make a dissolve. The Sumo 19 will write the edits to disk in an XML file that can be imported to an NLE timeline for further editorial attention.

The Sumo 19 ($2,495) is a 19-inch 1200-nit panel originally introduced at NAB 2017. AtomOS 9.2 for Sumo will be released as a free download from the Atomos website.

Cine Gear Expo 2018 wrapped, but one of the big news out of it was that Atomos announced the release of AtomOS 9.1 (or firmware update 9.1) unleashing lots of new features for the Atomos Sumo19 HDR production monitor recorder. New in AtomOS 9.1 for Sumo19 is the long-anticipated Quad ISO recording and on-screen selectable output switching, plus 5.7K ProRes RAW recording at up to 30fps with the Panasonic AU-EVA1.

In addition, AtomOS 9.1 enables full display of 5.7K images on-screen, automatic HDR detection on playback and a redesigned user interface are on offer. The same 5.7k ProRes RAW recording option will also be available as a free update for the Atomos Shogun Inferno 7″ HDR monitor recorder in the coming days.

The Sumo19 Quad ISO recording function streamlines the equipment required for multi-cam shoots and live productions by combining multiple functions into the same box.

With the recent EVA1 firmware release, Atomos announces an upgrade to its Shogun Inferno and Sumo19 products that allow the full potential of the EVA1 to be realised.

Panasonic’s just-announced firmware upgrade allows the EVA1 to output 5.7K Raw video though its 6G SDI port. This will massively increase the flexibility and quality of the output from this popular new camera.

Why 5.7K? It’s in a sweet spot where, after de-bayering (the process that turns the output from the Bayer pattern filtered sensor into full colour) the resulting resolution will be in excess of a true 4K.
