The Challenge
In this article, LiveU covers how RheinMain University of Applied Sciences aimed to give media students hands-on, real-world experience to prepare them for the evolving production industry. Partnering with netorium AG, the university launched the 5G Media Production Hackathon—an initiative designed to push the boundaries of 5G technology in live production.

This project allowed students to implement cutting-edge 5G solutions in real-world settings beyond campus. To ensure students gained experience with industry-standard tools, the university prioritized acquiring future-proof broadcast equipment from leading brands they would likely use in their professional careers.

The Solution
To anchor their mobile production setup, the university chose LiveU’s LU800 field unit. This advanced technology enhances 5G transmissions by bonding up to eight 5G connections at once while delivering premium video quality of up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR.

Professor Dr. Stephan Böhm from the Department of Telecommunication and Mobile Media highlighted that LiveU’s innovative technology was an ideal fit for the hackathon, providing next-generation video producers with direct exposure to state-of-the-art 5G broadcasting solutions. The LU800’s intuitive yet powerful design quickly made it an essential tool for students.

Equipped with LiveU backpacks, student production teams visited local businesses, streaming live content to YouTube. These broadcasts engaged younger students, offering valuable insights into potential career paths. Throughout the project, netorium AG—LiveU’s trusted German partner—provided both the equipment and on-site technical support, ensuring seamless operation of the LiveU technology.
