The blog post “A Hole In One: LiveU And Disc Golf Remote Production Case Study” from 4rfv details the innovative use of LiveU technology to enable remote production of Disc Golf events across Europe. Disc Golf, a flying disc sport similar to golf, has gained popularity, particularly in the US and Europe. The European Open, held in Nokia, Finland, posed unique challenges due to its course locations in sparsely populated areas, often with challenging terrain.
To overcome these challenges and provide dynamic coverage, Pulsea Disc Golf Media utilized the LiveU IP-video EcoSystem, integrating it seamlessly with the existing infrastructure. This allowed for the expansion of production capacity to 12 cameras for the complete European Tour, enhancing the viewing experience for fans.
The remote productions were directed from Rockway Oy’s studios in Helsinki, leveraging LiveU multi-camera LU800s and related servers. The lightweight LiveU units enabled camera operators to move freely around the courses, capturing detailed footage. The feeds were sent wirelessly to the studio, even from challenging locations, using SIM cards from local mobile phone operators.
The fully produced HD streams were then distributed to the Disc Golf Network, allowing viewers to watch the live video via its website or app. Tests were conducted to assess the feasibility of 4K streaming, with positive results. The broadcast utilized a variety of cameras, including Sony FX6, FX30, and A7 cameras, as well as a DJI RS3 gimbal and a Mavic Pro 3 drone.
This remote production workflow not only enabled cost savings compared to traditional on-site production but also contributed to sustainability efforts by reducing travel and resource consumption. Overall, LiveU technology played a crucial role in making Disc Golf events accessible to viewers in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
