Atomos Announces New Shogun Series

By Jennifer P 0 Comment October 26, 2023

In a recent blog post on TheBroadcastBridge, the author highlights Atomos’ latest innovation – the new generation of Shogun camera-mounted monitor-recorders: Shogun and Shogun Ultra. These new devices are set to push the boundaries of creative content production, and they come equipped with a cutting-edge operating system known as AtomOS 11. This new OS brings forth a plethora of innovative features, including EL Zone exposure referenced colorized images, ARRI False Color, and brand-new scheduled playback and recording tools.

One significant enhancement is the expansion of codecs available in the Shogun and Shogun Ultra, making them even more versatile. The Shogun now offers 6K Apple ProRes RAW (and 8K with the Shogun Ultra), along with Apple ProRes, DNxHD, and H.265, the latter of which was previously accessible only as a paid option. This broadened codec support ensures better consistency and compatibility across various production requirements. These two Shogun models share the same differentiating features introduced in the new Ninja and Ninja Ultra lines, further streamlining the user experience.

One of the key distinctions between the Shogun and Ninja lines is the Shogun’s brighter 2000nit 7-inch screen, which ensures excellent visibility in various lighting conditions. Furthermore, the Shogun boasts fully integrated connectivity, including both 12G-SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs. This feature enables cross-conversion, eliminating the need for additional components, which is a notable advantage over a Ninja equipped with Atomos Connect. Additionally, the Shogun offers more power options, featuring an NP battery slot and an integrated 2.1mm locking jack DC input socket, making it adaptable to a wide range of setups.

The Shogun Ultra, in particular, is optimized for use with cinematic cameras, offering the capability to record full-quality files to Apple ProRes RAW at up to 4K 60p while simultaneously recording HD 60p to H.265. It also supports automatic matching of filenames, timecode, and record trigger from many popular camera models, such as ARRI, Canon, RED, and Sony. This makes it an excellent choice for demanding cinematographic productions.

Both the Shogun and Shogun Ultra models come with an innovative 4K camera-to-cloud mode, allowing users to record and upload higher quality bitrate H.265 videos with increased framerates and customizable parameters. These files are lightweight enough for efficient camera-to-cloud workflows while maintaining exceptional quality for immediate use on social media, sports reporting, or news gathering.

Another noteworthy feature is the integration of Atomos RemoteView. This groundbreaking technology enables users to share live views from their Atomos screen with other Atomos monitors and various devices, including iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs, all done wirelessly. This capability opens up exciting opportunities for production teams to monitor on-set activities and view shots from connected cameras from anywhere in the world. RemoteView offers a unique set of features not typically found at this price point, enhancing collaboration and remote monitoring in the production process.

The Shogun Ultra goes a step further by offering lower latency cloud connectivity and higher throughput, thanks to its integration of Wi-Fi 6E technology. Atomos continues to demonstrate its commitment to staying at the forefront of technology by incorporating this cutting-edge Wi-Fi standard into its cloud-enabled products, ensuring a smoother and more efficient user experience.

For existing users of the Shogun Connect, there’s good news. AtomOS 11 will be made available as a free firmware update, ensuring they can take advantage of the latest features and enhancements. Additionally, it’s important to note that the Shogun Ultra is poised to replace the Shogun Connect, making it an enticing option for users seeking to upgrade to the latest and most advanced capabilities in camera-mounted monitor-recorders.

In conclusion, Atomos has raised the bar once again with the introduction of the Shogun and Shogun Ultra. With their advanced features, expanded codec support, improved connectivity options, and innovative technologies like AtomOS 11 and RemoteView, these devices promise to be invaluable tools for content creators, filmmakers, and production teams looking to take their projects to the next level. Whether for cinematic productions, live events, or on-set monitoring, the Shogun series is poised to deliver outstanding performance and creative possibilities.
