Atomos Ninja V vs. NEW Ninja and Ninja Ultra (in-depth comparison)

By Jennifer P 0 Comment November 17, 2023

The new Atomos Ninja and Ninja Ultra present a compelling upgrade with enhanced features and capabilities, catering to the needs of users seeking advanced functionality. Notable improvements include dual record functionality, 8K ProRes RAW support in the Ninja Ultra, and scheduled time-lapse recording. Unlike the Ninja, the Ninja Ultra excels in capturing 8K ProRes RAW for compatible cameras, while the Ninja is limited to recording up to 6K on compatible devices. An added flexibility comes with the Ninja V, now powered through USB-C, offering increased convenience for users.

Moreover, the new Ninja introduces two additional exposure tools, featuring false color measured by IR values and false color measured by stops. Cinematographers benefit from these tools, enhancing exposure options for better control. The inclusion of a record schedule is a noteworthy feature, allowing users to automatically initiate and conclude time lapses, streamlining the setup process and eliminating the need for constant monitoring.

Furthermore, the new Ninja provides H.265, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and DNX formats without additional costs, eliminating the need to purchase the EXT ra codex as required by the older Ninja. The camera and Cloud feature facilitate real-time access to 4K 422 10-bit H.265 files, enhancing workflow efficiency. Additionally, both the new Ninja and Ninja Ultra support remote viewing and high-quality streaming to up to four devices, including other Ninja or Ultra devices with the Connect module. Compatibility extends to iPad, MacBook, or phone, broadening the scope of accessible devices.

A significant enhancement is the introduction of ezone or AR false color to the new Ninja, contributing to its overall value proposition. The ability to sell the old Ninja to offset the cost of the upgrade further strengthens the case for transitioning to the new model.
