Atomos’ revolutionary Ninja Phone

In his blog post on Digital Camera World, Gareth Bevan introduces the Atomos Ninja Phone as a potential game-changer in the world of monitor-recorders. The Ninja Phone, which recently started shipping ahead of IBC 2024 in Amsterdam, is designed to revolutionize on-camera monitoring by transforming iPhones into professional-grade monitor-recorders. Although the device has yet to be tested by Digital Camera World, early indications suggest that the Ninja Phone could become an invaluable tool for filmmakers and content creators.
The Ninja Phone is currently compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, with Atomos promising future compatibility with other smartphones. The device takes advantage of Apple’s latest Bionic chipset in these iPhones, along with a video co-processor built into the Ninja Phone. This combination enables users to record footage in 10-bit Apple ProRes and H.265 from professional cameras with HDMI outputs. The footage can then be seamlessly uploaded to cloud platforms, including Atomos’ own Cloud Studio, via the iPhone’s 5G and WiFi 6E connectivity.
Atomos has made it easy to pair the Ninja Phone with professional cameras and external devices like wireless microphones through a USB-C connection and the Ninja Phone app. According to Jeromy Young, CEO and Co-Founder of Atomos, this device offers video professionals a simplified, cloud-based workflow without the need for complex equipment, while also enhancing the video production capabilities of content creators on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
