LIVE STREAMING GOES PRO WITH A HACKED BACKPACK

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 11, 2018

The backpack starts with a Sony AS300 Camera. [Gunrun] likes this particular camera for its exceptional audio capabilities. Network connections are handled with no less than four LTE modems. You never know which carrier will have good service out in the field, so the modems are available from a variety of carriers. The real problem is bonding connections between LTE modems from various carriers, setting up streaming accounts, and piping captured data from an HDMI capture over those accounts. The average hacker would go at it with an HDMI capture card and a Linux Laptop. Most streamers need a more plug and play solution though, so [Gunrun] uses a LiveU Solo HDMI video encoder for the task

LaCie ruggedises RAID to go (and then some)

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 7, 2018

LaCie has a reputation for building external drives with heft and resistance, and its latest lets you stabilise storage needs, too. There are folks happy with backing up once, and then there are folks who need to know their precious contents have been backed up twice, so they can securely delete them. Usually that’s people working in a creative field, but it can be anyone, because the failures of backing up where drives fail can affect anyone.

G-Technology G DRIVE mobile PRO SSD (1TB) Review

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 6, 2018

We have been reviewing TB3 external devices for some time now and it is great to be so far away from those 500MB/s and lower portable storage device speeds. TB3 has been a gift to media professionals, to say the least. Up until today, however, there has only been a single device that we have reviewed that has the portability of pocket sized mobile storage, and didn’t need external power of some sort. This was the Tekq Rapide TB3 Portable SSD and, as absolutely sweet as that device is, it just never hit main stream. Still, with such a beautiful cut and performance up to the TB3 ceiling of 2.8GB/s, the Tekq Rapide goes with me everywhere. Can we change that?

IBC 2018 Preview: An Expert’s View of IP Up-Take and Challenges

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 6, 2018

If you are wondering what the big news and big topics will be for IBC, Sports Video Group (SVG) in a recent interview with NewTek’s Brian Olson, vice president of product management, touched on all the likely topics, both for the industry in general and for NewTek. Adoption of IP workflow for video production continues to gain steam, and no doubt there will be lots to see again at this year’s show on that front. NewTek’s royalty free NDI®, bi-directional IP technology for transport of audio, video, metadata and communications over standard networks, continues a huge lead with integration into hundreds of products in the hands of millions of users. Many other proposed solutions require expensive high-bandwidth networking infrastructure and proprietary hardware and software, or remain on the drawing board.

Why Shoot With ProRes Raw?

By Jim Bask 0 Comment August 24, 2018

In this video I attempt to show why I like shooting with ProRes Raw. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what ProRes raw brings to the Sony PXW-FS5. It isn’t more dynamic range, more colour or better low light performance. What you get is more tonal values, more data, so your skin tones and other textures look more true to life and grade better.

A Simple Guide to Multi-Cam Live Streaming with Live:Air Action

By Jim Bask 0 Comment August 24, 2018

Live streaming doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, live streaming is being used more and more every year by individuals, businesses, organizations, and even governments for many purposes. Not only is it easier than ever before to go live (smartphones can do this with a click of a button), but there are a ton of tools out there to help you do it. All you need is content! Teradek’s Live:Air Action is one of those tools. In contrast to traditional hardware switchers, Live:Air Action is a software switcher for iPads that allows you to do things like add custom graphics, transitions, scoreboards, roll pre-recorded video and much more. Most importantly, this can all be done while live streaming directly from the iPad! It gives your live video a professional touch, similar to traditional live TV programs (news, sports, etc.).
