By Jim Bask 0 Comment December 18, 2017

When NewTek’s Video Toaster first arrived in 1990, it was a jaw-dropping moment as video professionals realized that you no longer needed an expensive SGI supercomputer to flip and spin video, create 3D animations, and other eye-candy video effects. The Toaster put a whole TV studio and post house on an Amiga computer for under $5,000.

By Jim Bask 0 Comment December 15, 2017

Wowza ClearCaster is a future-proof, industrial-strength hardware encoder with outstanding software robustness with its interface with Facebook Live, which is just what you need when venturing into the Wild, Wild, West that still is live-event production. Though the $6,495 price tag will discourage many potential buyers, those who can afford the unit will find the reliability and performance worthwhile. For the record, for $6,495, you also get three years of updates plus dedicated 24/7 technical support.

Media Composer — Best of 2017

By Jim Bask 0 Comment December 13, 2017

2017 was a big year for Media Composer. Avid introduced many cool features to help improve the everyday editing experience. Some were big and grabbed a lot of attention (Hello, ScriptSync and 8K Project presets!) and some were smaller, but still very useful. Many of them were requested and voted upon by our Avid Customer Association. (Speaking of which, if you’re not already a member of the ACA, you should check it out. At the very least, come party with us at Avid Connectbefore we kick off NAB 2018!)

VR headsets have been available for over a year now, and more content is constantly being developed for them. We should expect that rate to increase as new headset models are being released from established technology companies, prompted in part by the new VR features expected in Microsoft’s next update to Windows 10. As the potential customer base increases, the software continues to mature, and the content offerings broaden. And with the advances in graphics processing technology, we are finally getting to a point where it is feasible to edit videos in VR, on a laptop.
