How LED Wall Technology Is Revolutionizing Dementia Care — Inside the Gurwin Immersion Room

By Stephanie R 0 Comment March 19, 2026

At the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack, New York, a new kind of therapeutic environment is redefining how long-term care facilities support residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. The Gurwin Immersion Room, developed in partnership with Besser Rooms, is a first-of-its-kind virtual reality experience in New York designed specifically for memory care—without the need for headsets or wearable devices.

Instead of traditional VR goggles, the Immersion Room uses high-tech wall panels and advanced projection technology to surround residents with lifelike, interactive environments. The 13-foot by 13-foot space can transport residents to a variety of settings, from scenic travel destinations and outdoor cafés to even more dynamic experiences like roller coaster rides. By removing the barriers and discomfort often associated with wearable VR, the room creates a more accessible and engaging experience for seniors.

What sets the Immersion Room apart is its focus on multi-sensory engagement. Props equipped with tracking technology respond in real time to the virtual environment, while built-in aromatherapy adds another layer of immersion. This combination helps stimulate memory, encourage interaction, and create a calming atmosphere for residents who may experience agitation or anxiety.

The space is designed not only for stimulation, but also for comfort. A nearby park-like anteroom provides a quiet place for residents to relax, decompress, or participate in group programming. This thoughtful layout supports both active engagement and moments of rest, which are critical in dementia care.

As a non-pharmacological approach, the Immersion Room offers meaningful therapeutic benefits. It helps reduce unwanted behaviors, promote positive memories, and improve overall quality of life. For families, it also creates new ways to connect. In one example, a resident and her daughter regularly “take” virtual car rides through the countryside together—an experience that has become a cherished routine, sparking conversation and bringing a sense of joy and familiarity.

By integrating immersive technology into everyday care, Gurwin is expanding what’s possible in senior living environments. The Immersion Room demonstrates how virtual reality can be used as a powerful therapy tool, offering personalized, patient-centered experiences that support emotional well-being and strengthen human connection.
