How to film a no budget Spec ad
By Jennifer P
Director Michael Fitzpatrick and his team created a speculative advert for Nike using the dynamic combination of the Sony FX6 camera and Atomos Shogun Ultra monitor.
Titled ‘Making a Show of Yourself,’ the next to zero budget ad tells the emotive story of a group of athletes who overcome obstacles in their field through sheer determination and persistence in training.
The ad was filmed using the Sony FX6 camera and recorded directly to the Shogun via SSD. This enabled Michael to utilize the ProRes 422 HQ format, preserving the visual quality of the footage and allowing his team to experiment with the dynamic range of the shots.
The Shogun quickly became an on-set staple providing a wide range of benefits. It’s large 7-inch display with 2000nit brightness proved invaluable when shooting content in low-light environments. Built-in features such as focus peaking, false color and anamorphic squeeze enabled the team to get the best out of their images by checking exposure and focus levels in real-time. In addition, the Shogun’s intuitive, lightweight design enabled them to access external ports easily without the interference of cables.
Reflecting on the finished project, Michael said: “I’m delighted with the way the ad turned out. It’s the story I wanted to tell, delivered in the way I wanted to tell it.”
