In this article for NewscastStudio, the role of LiveU’s ecosystem in transforming live IP video coverage during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is explored. LiveU’s technology, synonymous with election reporting since its inception in 2006, reached new heights during this event, with over 4,000 field units deployed—the largest fleet ever for a single event and nearly double the usage during the 2020 election. These units facilitated comprehensive, on-the-ground coverage and real-time updates. An impressive 925 customers across 56 countries transmitted over 40 terabytes of data, amounting to nearly 40,000 hours of live content.
LiveU’s LU800 units played a crucial role, supporting both remote (REMI) and on-site productions. These devices enabled seamless live feed transmission from campaign events, reactions, and speeches to control rooms worldwide. In addition, the cloud-native LiveU Matrix platform proved vital by distributing 23,000 hours of live feeds and enabling broadcasters to share 7,500 individual feeds, nearly doubling 2020’s distribution figures. By fostering collaborative news pools, the platform expanded coverage from critical battleground states to campaign headquarters globally.
For the first time during a major event, LiveU Ingest was widely deployed, enabling broadcasters to automatically record live feeds with story metadata tagging integrated into their Media Asset Management (MAM) systems. This innovation facilitated faster field processing and content sharing among stations, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Over 6,500 recordings and more than 4,000 hours of content were processed during Election Day. Additionally, LiveU’s Mobile Data service and its Reliable Transport (LRT™) protocol provided robust connectivity at key campaign sites, enhancing performance and resiliency.
The article highlights LiveU’s extensive support efforts, including a dedicated Election Day taskforce and round-the-clock assistance. Engineers were stationed at candidate headquarters, providing technical support and additional equipment as needed. LiveU also offered its Private 5G Connectivity option during earlier election cycle events, such as the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, with plans to extend this service to the inauguration.
Brian Tully, LiveU’s Senior VP of Sales, emphasized the unprecedented scale of election coverage enabled by their ecosystem, citing the seamless flow of video traffic and the reliability of their support teams. The election coverage demonstrated the transformative power of LiveU’s technology in delivering high-quality, collaborative live content on a global scale.
