NAB 2024: Atomos Talks Ninja Phone

By Jennifer P 0 Comment May 27, 2024

In an interview at NAB 2024, Shawn Lam of Streaming Media speaks with Atomos CEO Jeromy Young about the new Atomos Ninja Phone, a device that transforms an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max into a high-quality monitor-recorder for professional HDMI cameras. This innovation leverages ProRes technology and the iPhone’s capabilities to provide a 1600-nit, 10-bit, HDR OLED display with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 460 PPI.

Jeromy Young explains that the Ninja Phone integrates seamlessly with professional cameras by using a specialized case that includes a locking mechanism and mounting options. The case protects the iPhone lenses and facilitates the connection of HDMI and audio inputs. The phone’s screen displays ProRes-encoded video in real-time, while also offering advanced monitoring features like peaking and flipping.

The system can record in ProRes or H.265 formats directly to the phone’s storage, supporting up to three hours of ProRes HQ 4:2:2 video. Additionally, the Ninja Phone can stream live to various platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and iCloud. It also supports NDI|HX 3 for integration into NDI workflows, effectively converting any connected camera into an NDI camera.
