NC State University: Delivering a Dynamic Learning Environment with the Panopto + Epiphan Integration
By Jennifer P
Thanks to the seamless Panopto and Epiphan integration, professors no longer needed to worry about activating the Pearl Mini in their lecture halls, as faculty who were already familiar with Panopto could simply press record as they always had.
The Challenge
A public land-grant research institution, NC State institution was formed on the idea of giving teachers and students access to a welcoming learning environment. Technology is a key component of the learning environment at NC State since innovation and accessibility are the university’s basic objectives.
Over the years, teacher and student input revealed a need at the university: improved class recording capabilities. However, the Digital Education and Learning equipment Applications (DELTA) team at NC State was increasingly asked to provide resources to enable recordings in more classes. Existing lecture capture equipment was largely designed for remote students. The DELTA team sought to develop a cohesive learning ecosystem that would improve NC State’s capacity for lecture capture.
The Solution
Panopto and the Epiphan Pearl Mini video production system were selected by NC State to give academics a hassle-free lecture recording experience. Each classroom was outfitted with a computer source, a microphone set on the ceiling, and a camera source for lecture capture.
“It’s important to create highly advanced learning environments so that our faculty members have the ability to provide engaging instruction and our students can access content quickly. Based on the feedback we received from students they definitely wanted courses recorded.”
Leisa Bolles, Director of Media Production Services (DELTA) at NC State University
Professors no longer had to worry about turning on the Pearl Mini in their lecture halls because Panopto users could just press record as they always had thanks to the seamless Panopto and Epiphan connection. For those who were unfamiliar with Panopto, the DELTA team created an automated control function that enabled professors to begin their lectures as soon as they entered the lecture hall. Shortly after the lecture ended, the recording began automatically, and the file was uploaded to the university’s LMS.
“The idea behind classroom capture is not for it to replace coming to class, not to replace attending your courses, but instead to be another tool on your tool belt of learning technologies.”
Leisa Bolles, Director of Media Production Services (DELTA) at NC State University
The Impact
With the incorporation of learning technology, NC State University’s lecture capture capacity has increased by a factor of four. The integrated learning ecosystem is used by over 40,000 students, and results started to show up less than a year after introduction.
Students have benefited from the Panopto and Epiphan integration, which has improved learning for those who attend in person and provided a safety net for those who are unable to physically attend. It also acts as a crucial hub for online students to engage with one another, bridging the distance between online and face-to-face learning environments. Learning technologies also foster diversity and fairness in the classroom by making the environment more accessible for students with impairments.
