ProRes RAW vs BRAW: Blackmagic Resolve Now Supports Both Codecs
By Stephanie R
The codec debate between ProRes RAW and BRAW takes an interesting turn as Blackmagic Design integrates Apple’s ProRes RAW into DaVinci Resolve 20.2. Filmmakers can now work with both compressed RAW formats on the same platform.
For years, Blackmagic’s BRAW served as its proprietary compressed RAW solution, offering small file sizes with extensive grading flexibility. Meanwhile, ProRes RAW gained traction across camera manufacturers like DJI, Nikon, and Panasonic, plus Apple’s iPhone lineup. The lack of cross-compatibility created workflow silos, forcing productions to choose one ecosystem over another.
The September 2025 update changes that dynamic. Resolve users can now handle ProRes RAW from multiple sources—iPhones, external recorders, and soon Blackmagic’s own Pocket Cinema Camera 4K—while maintaining BRAW workflows for native Blackmagic cameras.
Industry pressure and Apple’s push for ProRes RAW in professional mobile filmmaking likely accelerated the decision. CEO Grant Petty emphasized the company’s commitment to free software updates, positioning ProRes RAW support as another value-add for existing customers.
For video professionals, the update eliminates technical barriers when integrating footage from mixed sources, keeping entire projects within Resolve’s ecosystem regardless of capture format.
