Review: LaCie 1big Dock and Rugged SSD Pro

Review: LaCie 1big Dock and Rugged SSD Pro

By Jamie G 0 Comment May 28, 2021

The LaCie 1big Dock and Rugged SSD Pro both have large and fast options with Thunderbolt connectivity, which is why Chris Foreman of RedShark wanted to see what the two powerful drives can do together. For Foreman’s review he used the 16TB 1big Dock (also avaialble in 4TB, 8TB, & 16TB) and the 1TB Rugged SSD Pro (also available in 2TB).

The Lacie 16TB 1big dock combines a 16TB Seagate IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA 3.5″ hard drive that delivers data transfer speeds of up to 240 MB/s with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a USB 3.0 Type-A port, a DisplayPort 1.4 output for 4K video, and SD and CompactFlash card slots. The LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt External SSD provides 1TB of high-speed storage to virtually every type of system that sports a Thunderbolt, USB Type-A, or USB Type-C port. This LaCie Rugged is armed with an SSD, which delivers data at rates of up to 510 MB/s, along with an integrated Thunderbolt cable capable of transferring data at rates of up to 10 Gb/s.

Check out some highlights from Foreman’s review about these two storage solutions.

“There’s room for improvement with the 1big, it may suit those not needing a full dock but where a combined card reader and external drive with additional connectivity would make sense. On the other hand the Rugged Pro SSD is something that could easily find it’s way into my pocket workflow.”

Chris Foreman

“LaCie also have the Rugged Pro SSD which offers connection over USB or Thunderbolt and supports data rates of up to 2800 MB/s. …It’s small in size but features great speeds and has the benefit of working over both USB-C and Thunderbolt, something that the similar Samsung X5 can’t do. Although when using USB-C speeds are of course limited, in testing they were 433 MB/s read 420MB/s write.”
