SanDisk Pro-Blade SSD System Review

SanDisk Pro-Blade SSD System Review

By Jennifer P 0 Comment May 23, 2024

In their review for PhotographyLife, Alex Coleman evaluates the SanDisk Pro-Blade SSD System, targeting professional photographers and videographers who manage large volumes of data. Traditionally, professionals capture media on in-camera storage, offload it to a portable hard drive, and later transfer it to a desktop system. The Pro-Blade line aims to unify these processes. Central to this system is the Pro-Blade Mag SSD, available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options. The SSDs can be directly used for filming, connected to either the portable “Transport” enclosure or the desktop “Station” enclosure, streamlining workflow by eliminating the import step and leveraging the SSDs’ high speeds for both recording and editing.

Coleman describes the Mag SSD as compact and robust, with aluminum housing rated for drops and crushes. It connects via a proprietary interface designed for durability and high throughput. Performance claims include 3000+ MB/s read speeds, though actual speeds depend on the enclosure and computer interface.

The Transport enclosure, for portable use, supports a single Mag SSD and offers up to 2000MB/s read/write speeds through a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2 port. The Station enclosure supports up to four Mag SSDs, offering 3000+ MB/s over Thunderbolt 3, suitable for high-demand workflows.

Performance tests showed the Mag SSDs performing excellently, saturating available USB-C bandwidth and maintaining high speeds during large file transfers without overheating or throttling. However, full speeds are only achievable with specific interfaces, and the Transport enclosure’s lack of Thunderbolt support limits its performance on many systems.

Despite these limitations, Coleman praises the Pro-Blade ecosystem for its high-quality build, modularity, and professional design, recommending it for users needing fast, portable, and swappable storage solutions. He acknowledges that the system is pricier than simpler SSD options but justifies the cost with its unique features and performance benefits. For those needing even higher speeds and durability without the modularity, he suggests considering the SanDisk Pro-G40. Overall, the Pro-Blade ecosystem is deemed an excellent choice for professionals requiring a streamlined and robust storage solution.
