Content creators in the field need a reliable and fast storage solution that can handle demanding workflows of 4K and beyond, with the ability to easily move and capture footage from location to location. Not being able to move data quickly and reliably to the next stage of the workflow is one of the biggest pain points in video production.
See the stunning London Lumiere Festival captured using the Sony A7R III and Atomos Ninja Flame 4K HDR monitor / recorder. The Ninja Flame adds 4K recording direct to Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR. Monitor and record Sony S-Log2, S-Log3 or HLG for excellent results, even in low light. Gain 4:2:2 recording over HDMI using an intra frame codec with much higher bitrates than recording internally.
But, what surprises me is how few questions I get, asking about what storage to buy. Yet, as we move into 4K, 6K, 8K and HDR images, storage needs explode. Recently, during a Digital Production Buzz interview, Gary Watson, cofounder and Chief Technical Officer for Nexsan told me that a 4K HDR video file requires 1.8 GB / second of storage bandwidth. And 8K files are four TIMES bigger than that!
