I have attended Avid Connect, the world’s greatest gathering of professionals in the media industry, since its inception in 2014. Similarly to previous years, I was quick to save my spot for 2017. As the head of audio post at SpotBot, Inc., and a passionate music composer and engineer, I find this conference valuable for many reasons, but most of all for inspiration, knowledge, and networking.
It seems that nonlinear editing systems, like Adobe Premiere, Apple FCP X, Lightworks, Vegas and Blackmagic Resolve are being updated almost weekly. At first, I was overjoyed with the frequent updates. It got to the point where I would see a new codec released on a Monday and by Friday you could edit with it (maybe a slight exaggeration, but pretty close to the truth). Unfortunately, this didn’t always mean the updates would work.

I started out as an assistant editor four years ago and was constantly switching between different nonlinear editing systems such as Final Cut Pro and Premiere. I had a basic knowledge of Avid Media Composer but knew that to step up my game and become a feature film editor, I would have to master the art of Media Composer.

Ok, it’s just a keyboard, right? Not quite! While Logickeyboard may not be the first out of the gate to offer a backlit keyboard for post production, to my mind the brand-new Astra offers a ton of bang-for-the-buck features, and addresses some deficiencies I’ve seen in the only competition in this narrow product field. (I reviewed a competitor in Post’s May 2015 issue.)
