Avid Customer Association has Influenced 2016 Media Composer Release
By Jim Bask

The recent launch of Media Composer 8.7 is the culmination of a number of exciting Media Composer releases in 2016. Throughout this year a plethora of new features were introduced that accelerate creative storytelling, many of which were developed and prioritized as a result of a poll of ACA members held in 2015.

This one update for Media Composer is one that every Media Composer editor has been waiting for, well, their entire editing career! Not only does this feature update include welcome features like Frame Flex rotation toggles (90 deg clockwise and counterclockwise), but a fix has come to an issue that has plagued MC editors for years

Motion Tracking is a task that many editors tend to shy away from — often due to a bad first time experience. The difficult track that got away can lead to time consuming manual keyframing.

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, we are definitely in an interesting time! I’ve written this review on the heels of probably the second biggest announcement in our industry in recent memory, and the funny thing is that the same company was behind both big news announcements. Boris FX’s purchase of Imagineer Systems was a groundbreaking purchase as, at the time, it gave editors the hope of having Mocha tracking capabilities in their NLE timelines and, needless to say, Boris FX and Imagineer Systems delivered. Big time.
It seems that nonlinear editing systems, like Adobe Premiere, Apple FCP X, Lightworks, Vegas and Blackmagic Resolve are being updated almost weekly. At first, I was overjoyed with the frequent updates. It got to the point where I would see a new codec released on a Monday and by Friday you could edit with it (maybe a slight exaggeration, but pretty close to the truth). Unfortunately, this didn’t always mean the updates would work.
Avid sponsored the annual ACE EditFest in London this summer and had the chance to sit down with a must-see panel of talented editors. Our new Making The Cut blog series features award–winning editors discussing their craft, their workflows, creative processes and upcoming projects in an exclusive and intimate setting.
