NDI is a network protocol that enables audio, video, and metadata signals to be sent over standard networks in real-time. NDI is bidirectional, low latency, and can transmit video up to 4K and beyond. It is used in some of the largest broadcast environments in the world and many pro AV integrations. It is also used by individual users for video presentations or game streaming on single PC setups.

Welcome to NDI in Two Minutes, the show about NDI for those that have busy schedules, short attention spans, or both. NDI 5 is a quantum leap in IP technology. Making NDI 5 the best NDI ever!
Several major technology providers in the professional AV and broadcast industries have reacted with excitement to the NDI 5 announcement. NDI 5 allows anyone to easily share live, high quality, low latency video with anyone else in real time, using billions of devices.
Released in 2015, NDI is a royalty-free technology that implements low-latency video, audio, tally and control over gigabit networking. Since 2015, NDI has grown in popularity immensely and is now very widely used within AV, live streaming production and in cloud workflows.
According to Namatinia, NDI 5 was in development for two years. “We really wanted to create a release that would change the way NDI is seen within the world,” he said. “We are very close to our clients. We’re lucky that we have so many end users that we could have a back and forth, and most of these features are what our end users and our SDK users have been waiting for.”

By now, no doubt you will likely have seen the news that there is a new flavour of NDI on the way; NDI version 5 is going to be made available at some point in June. And it’s honestly not hyperbole to say that this is a bit of a game-changer when it comes to IP production as this lifts the uses of the NDI protocol away from the LAN and up to a point where NDI networks can talk to each other no matter where they are.
NDI President Michael Namantinia takes us through what’s new under the hood of NDI 5.
