In this video I attempt to show why I like shooting with ProRes Raw. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what ProRes raw brings to the Sony PXW-FS5. It isn’t more dynamic range, more colour or better low light performance. What you get is more tonal values, more data, so your skin tones and other textures look more true to life and grade better.

Filmmakers all over the world are embracing an affordable new route to higher-than-4K video recording. It’s just a few weeks since Atomos enabled support for 5.7K Apple ProRes RAW recording from the Panasonic EVA1 with the Shogun Inferno monitor/recorder, but filmmaker David Fernandes and DP Gregory Bennett have already become the first to use 5.7K ProRes RAW on a full-scale production
Alister Chapman of XDCAM-USER.com presented a Webinar in conjunction with Visual Impact on how to shoot ProRes Raw with Sony’s FS5 and FS7.
The first thing to know about the myriad of “RAW” and “RAW-like” codecs is that each of them sets out with the same goal in mind: to record full or near-full sensor readout without encoding any user-defined settings in the footage. This information — such as ISO, white balance, and color space — is saved in a separate metadata file to be used in an NLE.
From everything I’ve seen, ProRes Raw appears to be a worthy successor to the existing codec

Apple’s commitment to professionals was impressively underscored at NAB18 with the reveal of ProRes RAW and yet another significant (and free) update of FCPX. That said, Apple’s future direction has become much more uncertain with official-seeming leaks about a switch to ARM, a rethink of the iOS / Mac divide and more.
