What is a flipped classroom (and how it helps students develop life skills)

Marta Chernova of Epiphan Video wrote a geart article on the benfits of having a flipped classroom, and how the Pearl Mini can help schools and universities create this type of class. According to Epiphan, a flipped classroom is an “instructional strategy that moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. Here, students complete the instructional portion at home on their own time and work on problem-solving during class time.”
Many schools use this type of classroom because direct instruction isn’t always the best use of classroom time. Having engaging conversations about the material has been proven to be more effective. Biology students at Stonehill College used the flipped classroom approach. They accessed the lectures through the school’s learning management system on their own time to prepare for the class. This allows students to go at their own pace and be able to pause and rewind as needed. Then, during class time, students are focused on discussion, problem solving, and case studies.

In my case, that means that [my students] are watching a lecture prior to coming to class, and then they’re doing the hard work of learning, the part where they really have to think through things, the part where they have to be talking to their peers, and asking questions in the classroom.”
