CFexpress is one of the latest memory card formats. Alexandra Huff from BorrowLenses wrote a great article explaining what you need to know about CFexpress
No matter if you are shooting photos or videos, you will need a memory card in you camera to storage all of your media. When choosing a new camera, you might be tempted to pick based on memory card options. CFexpress is a relatively new format on the scene.
What is CFexpress?
“The quick and easy answer is that CFexpress is another memory card format, but that’s not entirely accurate. CFexpress is better described as a family of memory cards.” In fact, there are three types of CFexpress: Type A, Type B, and Type C. Each of these formats have their own characteristics.
Type A
CFexpress Type A is the smallest, and also the slowest, of all the CFexpress cards. It’s size is 20mm x 28mm x 2.8mm, which is similar in size an SD card, but thicker. It has a maximum write speed of 1 GB/s.
Type B
CFexpress Type B has a form factor identical to XQD cards, and because of this, Type B CFexpress cards have had the fastest adoption. With a simple firmware update, camera manufacturers have been able to offer CFexpress Type B compatibility via XQD slot. CFexpress Type B has a maximum write speed of 2 GB/s.
Type C
CFexpress Type C is the largest card, but also has the fastest write speeds, with a max of 4 GB/s. Because of the card’s larger size, there are currently no consumer cameras that offer CFexpress Type C.
