What is Remote Production?

What is Remote Production?

By Jennifer P 0 Comment October 19, 2023

The blog post by Matrox discusses the concept of remote production (REMI), a growing trend in the broadcasting industry. REMI involves capturing live event content and sending it via IP links to a centralized production facility for final production and distribution. This approach offers several advantages for broadcasters aiming to create compelling live online content while optimizing resources and minimizing costs.

Two primary REMI workflow approaches are outlined:

  1. In-Studio Production: In this method, SDI feeds from the field are encoded and transported to a central studio over IP, where they are converted back to SDI feeds. This allows broadcasters to manage and produce content as if the cameras were physically present in the studio, reducing the need to send OB trucks, crews, and equipment to multiple event locations.
  2. Cloud-Based Production: Cloud-based production involves migrating live production systems from on-premises to cloud-based platforms, often offered as Software as a Service (SaaS). SDI feeds from the field are encoded and streamed to cloud platforms, from which produced feeds are delivered to cloud-based Over-the-Top (OTT) delivery platforms.

The blog post highlights the top five benefits of remote production:

  1. Cost Reduction: By minimizing travel expenses and equipment transportation, REMI enables broadcasters to keep resources in-house, reducing costs.
  2. Leveraging Existing Infrastructure: REMI allows the use of existing infrastructure for live event production, transmitting data to control centers and reducing on-premises infrastructure requirements.
  3. Agility and Flexibility: REMI provides unique workflow options by accessing a broader pool of talent and resources, optimizing resource allocation and facilitating remote work.
  4. Removing Geographic Barriers: Geographic limitations are eliminated, promoting remote collaboration among hosts, guests, correspondents, and staff, regardless of their locations.
  5. Increased Live Content Delivery: Equipment can be reused across multiple venues to cover various events in a single day, expanding live event coverage and reaching a broader audience.

In conclusion, REMI workflows offer broadcasters a way to enhance the production of live events, making it more cost-effective, flexible, and accessible, while breaking down geographic barriers and increasing the delivery of live content.
