Formula X adopts NDI for seamless live stream on race day
By Jennifer P
In a thrilling development for motorsport enthusiasts, Formula X Racing Weekend has recently embarked on a technological journey, adopting NDI (Network Device Interface) technology to ensure a seamless and high-quality live stream during their high-octane racing events. This Italian motorsport championship, well-known for its intense high-speed action, faced a unique challenge – setting up video production at various race tracks across Italy, all within limited timeframes and with a need for an easy-to-use, cable-free, and bandwidth-efficient solution.
To overcome this hurdle, the organizers of Formula X Racing Weekend turned to the trusted expertise of ADCOM and Kiloview. Their mission: to craft a full IP-based live-streaming solution that harnessed Kiloview’s cutting-edge products, effectively making NDI HX the backbone of their video transmission. The cornerstone of this solution was the deployment of six Kiloview P1 and P2 4G Bonding Encoders strategically placed on different cameras, which promised ultra-low latency, ensuring real-time video delivery with less than one-second delay for remote production.
Additionally, Kiloview’s MG300 Media Gateway played a pivotal role, expertly transcoding the SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) stream from the cameras directly into NDI HX, thus enabling a full IP workflow. NDI HX itself is renowned for its prowess in reducing bitrates and minimizing compression artifacts, resulting in visually lossless images. With the added advantage of very low glass-to-glass latency and a rapidly growing ecosystem of devices, NDI HX effectively removes the limitations of video connectivity. This makes it the perfect video connectivity format for challenging environments, where bandwidth might be limited.
Summing up the shift to NDI technology, Simone Messina, the Technical Consultant of Formula X Racing Weekend, emphasized, “The client wanted to have a full IP workflow, so instead of using standard SDI decoding for each camera, we moved to a total NDI solution.”
The outcome of this technological upgrade was nothing short of spectacular. The live stream during the Formula X Racing Weekend events kept fans on the edge of their seats, providing real-time updates on the high-speed action unfolding on the racetrack. Kiloview’s NDI-based solution also allowed for cloud deployment using VPS (Virtual Private Server) technology, offering unmatched flexibility in setup without the need for additional physical computers. Most notably, the preparation, setup, and rehearsal time for the event was significantly reduced from several days to just a few hours, thanks to this innovative broadcast solution.
In recognition of Kiloview’s invaluable contribution, Luca Panizzi, CEO of FX Master Racing Weekend, praised the outcome, stating, “Kiloview provided an all-IP workflow for this event, reducing the need for hardware and staffing compared to standard-based broadcasting events. To some extent, it lowers production prices overall. The applied technology fully meets our needs. This IP workflow opens many possible solutions for event direction setup, from the most complex outside broadcast solution to a single workstation.”
Formula X Racing Weekend’s adoption of NDI technology has indeed ushered in a new era of streamlined and efficient live streaming for motorsport fans across Italy, exemplifying how cutting-edge technology can enhance the experience of both live event organizers and their passionate audiences.
