OWC Express 1M2 review: SSDs don’t get much better than this
By Jennifer P
In his review for MacWorld, Thomas Bergbold highlights the OWC Express 1M2 external SSD, noting its impressive cooling-fin design, which plays a significant role in its overall height. Effective cooling is crucial for high-speed NVMe SSDs, and during testing, the fins managed to keep the device’s temperature within safe limits, even after prolonged use. The aluminum housing is both durable and sizable, making it versatile for stationary or portable use, with rubber surfaces underneath to prevent slipping and scratching.
Although the connection cable is somewhat short, the Express 1M2 delivers outstanding performance, particularly in speed tests. Bergbold reports that using Aja System Test Lite and Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test, the device achieved impressive data transfer rates, with read speeds surpassing 3000MBps. The speed remained consistent during endurance tests, indicating reliable performance over time. OWC’s claims of high read speeds were confirmed in testing on both M3 MacBook Air and Mac Studio, validating the device’s top-tier capabilities.
Overall, Thomas Bergbold concludes that the OWC Express 1M2 offers an excellent price-performance ratio, featuring high data transfer rates and robust thermal management. Its compatibility with future NVMe SSD upgrades adds to its appeal. OWC also provides a three-year warranty on fully configured models and a two-year warranty on empty cases, making it a reliable and future-proof storage solution for Mac users.
