NHL Makes History with First All-Cloud Live Broadcast Using Vizrt & NDI
By Stephanie R
The NHL broke new ground by producing its first-ever live game entirely in the cloud, becoming the first major U.S. sports league to adopt a fully cloud-native workflow. This innovative approach replaced traditional production trucks with a cloud-based system powered by NDI, Vizrt, AWS, and Verizon. The goal? Greater flexibility, improved fan experiences, and a production model built for the future.
The broadcast team proved that everything—from graphics to camera switching—could be managed remotely using a mobile network instead of fixed wired connections. This allowed for seamless, low-latency production across venues, including those outside standard arenas. NDI served as the foundation for real-time video transport, while Vizrt handled live graphics and switching in the cloud.
Crucially, the NHL prioritized educating its production teams, showing them that cloud tools aren’t just viable—they’re more efficient. With fewer hardware limitations and increased creative flexibility, the NHL is setting a new standard for how live sports can be produced in a modern, mobile-first world. Watch the video below:
