With Media Composer 2026.8, Avid is making a significant change to Media Composer First, removing many of the limitations that previously separated the free version from professional editing workflows.
Media Composer First now supports unlimited tracks and bins, projects up to 8K and beyond, and the same core timeline, trimming, effects, and finishing workflow used across Avid's paid Media Composer tiers. Projects can also move between First and Media Composer Standard, Ultimate, and Enterprise environments.
For broadcasters, post-production facilities, educators, and media organizations, the change creates a more accessible path for training future editors on Avid Media Composer workflows before they enter professional environments. Students and emerging editors can develop familiarity with Avid's keyboard shortcuts, bin organization, media management, and editing methodology using real projects rather than a heavily restricted version.
By lowering the barrier to learning Media Composer, Avid is making its professional editing ecosystem more accessible to the next generation of editors while creating a clearer transition from education and independent production into professional post-production.
