In the latest article by Matthew Allard ACS for News Shooter, Teradek’s announcement of the Ranger Micro and Ranger II wireless video transmission systems takes center stage. The standout feature of these systems is their 6GHz support (U-NII 5), which positions them as advanced solutions in the realm of RF-based wireless video transmission. Despite the average latency for such systems being around 30.8ms, the Ranger series claims to achieve true zero-delay (<1ms) with visually lossless picture quality, a significant feat considering the human eye can detect delays as low as 13ms. This zero-delay capability, combined with the addition of 6GHz support, introduces 12 newly-opened RF channels, theoretically allowing for interference-free operation between 4.9GHz and 6.4GHz on licensed and unlicensed bands.

Notably, the Ranger series addresses the demand for high-quality video transmission in various professional settings, including broadcast, sports, and ENG applications. The systems boast an impressive maximum range of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), catering to diverse scenarios such as handheld gimbals, drones, and shoulder-mounted production cameras. The versatility of the Ranger Micro and Ranger II makes them suitable for a wide range of applications within the professional video production landscape.

A key advantage of the Ranger II is its ability to send visually lossless 4K HDR with AES-256 encryption, setting it apart from other RF-based wireless video transmission systems that often rely on compressed HEVC and H.264 images. Additionally, the Ranger II introduces Granular Frequency Control, allowing users to make precise adjustments to the frequency of their signal in 5MHz increments. This level of control enhances the adaptability of the system in complex and dynamic production environments.

Both the Ranger Micro and Ranger II provide practical connectivity options, with the former limited to sending SDI and HDMI signals up to 1080 60p and the latter supporting SDI and HDMI signals up to 4K 60p. The inclusion of various inputs and outputs, along with the option to pair previous and current Ranger systems together, underscores the flexibility and scalability of Teradek’s latest wireless video transmission offerings. With features catering to the demands of live event production, the Ranger series emerges as a compelling choice for professionals seeking cutting-edge technology in the field of wireless video transmission.
