Hands-On with the HDMI Atomos Ninja V recorder/monitor

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 14, 2018

With only a few days left before I leave to IBC in Amsterdam Atomos contacted me and asked if I would like to get my hands on the new Ninja V. I, of course, said yes! They sent a preproduction Ninja V to check out.
I first saw the 5″ HDMI monitor/recorder at NAB 2018 and was impressed with the design, however, the Ninja V wasn’t ready for prime time yet as Atomos didn’t power it up for us to see the 1000 nit screen and new user interface. Well, today I have my hands on a working Ninja V. Since it’s still in beta software some of the icons will look different but for the most part the layout of the menu and interface is what you see her

Matrox. These guys make amazing streaming kit that really does work! We use it (so it can’t be “that hard” to set up) for our live shows and they encode fantastic quality image and are hugely reliable. A true “streaming appliance”. They also have a huge range of converters and various recorders as well. Pop over and say Matt from RedShark said to say Hi. Hall 7, B15.

Twitch vs. YouTube vs. Facebook for Free Live Streaming

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 12, 2018

Let’s start with YouTube. While Facebook has gotten a lot of attention lately, YouTube offers some distinct advantages. Let’s consider audience first.
YouTube doesn’t have a newsfeed or pages or groups. All it has is video. Sure, there are channels and playlists, but they’re just a collection of videos. Even the discussions on YouTube are centered around videos.
So, it should come as no surprise that YouTube wants you to watch videos. In fact, they don’t care (for the most part) which videos you watch as long as you stay on YouTube to watch them.
With that said, newer videos tend to be more relevant to questions being asked, so YouTube tends to promote those. Since nothing is newer than live, anyone searching on YouTube (or Google for that matter) is likely to get some live, or recently live videos as part of the search.

Atomos quick to take advantage of EOS R’s external recording

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 12, 2018

Whenever a new product that moves the goalposts drops on the market, other companies are very quick to line up and show you how you can hit the ball into the back of the new net. Atomos is skilled at doing this, and while it has nothing with the EOS R to match the time it launched the Ninja Inferno and upgraded Panasonic’s GH5 from its shipping internal 8-bit 4:2:0 Long GOP to 10-bit, 4:2:2, ProRes/DNxHR in one fell stroke, its kit is a good match for the new camera.

LIVE STREAMING GOES PRO WITH A HACKED BACKPACK

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 11, 2018

The backpack starts with a Sony AS300 Camera. [Gunrun] likes this particular camera for its exceptional audio capabilities. Network connections are handled with no less than four LTE modems. You never know which carrier will have good service out in the field, so the modems are available from a variety of carriers. The real problem is bonding connections between LTE modems from various carriers, setting up streaming accounts, and piping captured data from an HDMI capture over those accounts. The average hacker would go at it with an HDMI capture card and a Linux Laptop. Most streamers need a more plug and play solution though, so [Gunrun] uses a LiveU Solo HDMI video encoder for the task
