When People Start Getting Real: IRL Live Streaming

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 24, 2018

When writing this article, I was reminded of the first time I heard the MTV Real World title sequence. That show ushered in the wave unscripted reality television that was recorded and edited for our viewing pleasure. But In Real Life (or IRL) takes this unscripted approach to the next level. These content creators are live streaming their daily lives and adventures for global audiences, any time, from anywhere. Many of these streamers were born out of Twitch, originally creating channels focused on video and tabletop gaming. But when Pokémon GO exploded in 2016 and players like aDrive, started to implement outdoor live streaming to engage with fans they go on the hunt, the IRL streaming movement was born.

Review: NewTek Connect Spark Cuts the Cord for Wireless Video Transmission over NDI

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 20, 2018

The NewTek Connect Spark is a simple tool that does a whole heck of a lot. Not only will it transmit an HDMI or SDI signal wirelessly over existing network infrastructure to an NDI enabled switcher, but it will also loop record to an SD card or USB hard drive. Network Device Interface, or NDI, is an open standard that enables products to communicate, deliver and receive broadcast quality video with low latency and frame-accuracy for switching in a live production. What kind of video you transmit is up to you — the applications are near endless.

New Mirrorless Cameras Are Serious About 4K, with 10-Bit 4:2:2 Output (and HDR) via HDMI

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 20, 2018

As the arms race in mirrorless cameras heats up — led by Sony, which was an early proponent of the technology with its Alpha A7R and A7S cameras — the smaller, lighter DSLR alternatives are becoming more numerous and fully featured. That’s never been more apparent than it is right now, with new models from Fujifilm as well as mirrorless newcomers Canon and Nikon taking pains to appeal to video shooters as much as they do to still photographers

Making the Cut: Matrox Helps the Australian Screen Editors Guild Webcast Inaugural Edit Royale Event

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 18, 2018

The Australian Screen Editors (ASE) guild is dedicated to the pursuit and recognition of excellence in the arts, sciences, and technology of motion picture film and televisual post production. It aims to promote and protect the role of the editor as an essential and significant contributor to all screen productions. One such promotional event held by the guild is the Sydney Edit Royale, where five emerging editors are given just two hours to edit and complete a one-minute music video using never-before-seen video footage and music. To make an impression, editors have to demonstrate their creativity and speed using only an Apple® iMac® computer and the editing software of their choice. At stake are two tickets to attend the Annual Australian Screen Editor Awards (The Ellies), and more importantly, an opportunity to make an impression across the industry.

DEVINSUPERTRAMP: FLYING, FREEZING, AND FALLING INTO MILLIONS OF FOLLOWERS

By Jim Bask 0 Comment September 17, 2018

Devin Graham, aka devinsupertramp, made that journey. We wanted to profile him not just because he’s a rabid G-Technology user, but mostly because he’s awesome. That sounds silly and hyperbolic, we know. It’s not. Look at his extreme sports work. Rarely have we seen such a consistently impressive mix of beauty, athleticism, insanity, and all-out fun from an artist. Follow his work and you’ll see phrases like “probably not our safest idea” pop up repeatedly. If you have any fond memory of childhood, and any aesthetic appreciation as a creative adult, you’ll find devinsupertramp irresistible.
